Q&A

Why have I suddenly developed nasal congestion and drainage since starting with PAP therapy?

In most cases, the reason for newly developed nasal issues after starting PAP therapy is that your airway is now more open more of the time and is responding to the presence of air.  The solution may be as simple as increasing the temperature on your humidifier in order to create more humidity.  If that doesn't help, it is recommended that you see your doctor for further evaluation and treatment suggestions.

Tip of the Month:  Know Your Pressure

Do you know what your CPAP/Bilevel pressure setting is?  If not, find out!  If you do know your pressure setting, do you know if it is accurate?

Over time and use, CPAP and bilevel machines become uncalibrated.  Usually the calibration will not be off by very much-a half to one cm.  But it is a good idea to have your machine checked by your equipment provider periodically to make sure it is putting out the amount of pressure ordered by your doctor.

Your equipment provider will use a manometer to measure the actual pressure output of your machine, and can then make the proper adjustment to ensure that you are receiving the pressure therapy ordered by your doctor.

If you are interested in checking your machine's pressure output yourself, Click Here to purchase your own manometer!
