Welcome to Summer
"The summer hath his joys...A heavenly paradise is that place wherein all pleasant fruits do flow."
In the 17th century, that is how Tomas Campion described summer.
Four centuries later, the New Brunswick Cultural Center and the city's arts community prepare to welcome summer of 2011. The pace in June, July, and August will slow, but not the quality and variety of performances and presentations. As this calendar demonstrates, summer arts in New Brunswick will provide many opportunities for you. Enjoy them!

EXHIBITIONS Jolán Gross-Bettelheim: An American Printmaker in an Age of Progress Through July 31 This exhibition features rare prints by the Hungarian-American artist Jolán Gross-Bettelheim (1900-1972), a pioneering modernist woman printmaker. Gross-Bettelheim excelled in creating prints of industrial scenes, machinery, and technology. Her compositions celebrated the modernist geometric imagery that prevailed during America's machine age.
Mystics and Moderns: Painting in Estonia before Glasnost Apr. 30, 2011 - Oct. 28, 2011 Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, became an important center for underground art in the late 1960s. Turning to painting, artists revived the European painterly origins of Estonia's avant-garde past. Painting allowed artists to assimilate or reject contemporary trends from the nearby West. Nationalist opposition to Soviet power gave birth to the 1980s National Awakening. Mystics and Moderns draws on rarely seen works from the Dodge Collection to celebrate that opposition.
