Nichole Craft

I grew up on a 32 acre farm on the Oregon coast. We lived in the "big white house on the
hill." We had cherries, apples, pears,
and plums. Our driveway was lined with
lilacs, and the golden chain tree set a perfect view from our sunroom. The dark red Camellia looked tropical to me,
and the Holly was a perfect place to sit under.
This place was truly heaven on earth.
We raised cows, chickens, and rabbits.
I learned the circle of life, although I tried desperately to save all
the animals from their inevitable end.
We grew a large garden each year, eventually building
our own greenhouses to give a boost against the cool coastal weather. Once my siblings had moved away, I was left
with what seemed to be at the time, a huge responsibility. When I turned 18 I moved to N. Carolina,
where I swore I would never garden again.
Well that first year away I couldn't wait to plant my very own garden,
and every year after I've enjoyed digging in the dirt. Now I have the pleasure of teaching my own
children.
Coming to work for
Garland's has been an amazing learning experience. The staff's goal is to send you home with
everything necessary to succeed. A
little knowledge goes a long way, and every day is still an awesome learning
experience. Come out and say hi and
let's see what we can learn together!. |

Royal Purple Smoketree and Allium christophii
 | Purple Passion
by Karen Hopson
Associated with wealth and opulence, purple and plum add rich color to any color scheme. On the softer side, purple lightened with white evokes the soft, light sweetness of lavender and lilacs. Purples blend harmoniously with pink, blue, silver and white, creating a garden with old-fashioned charm. Purple can also look stunning with orange, yellow, chartreuse and red, forming rich color contrasts. There are so many sumptuous plum and purple flowers. The first to bloom in my garden are the silky purple goblets of Crocus, delightful harbingers of spring. Soon to follow are masses of fragrant mauve purple flower spikes of Bowles Mauve Erysimum that continue to bloom spring through summer. Large clumps of Tulips, from mauve to purple black, are the stars of the garden March-April and are wonderful for bouquets. In May the sweet fragrance of soft lavender to deep purple Lilacs fill the air. The elaborately-shaped blooms of Iris evoke the sensuous paintings of Georgia O'Keefe. An arbor nearby is draped with thousands of deeply fragrant, soft purple clusters of Wisteria. By June, Roses flaunt their magnificent fragrant flowers. The intricate globes of Alliums are great accents in the garden even after their purple colors fade to form architectural seedheads. Soft lavender blooms of Nepeta, hardy Geraniums and Campanulas provide months of easy-care color. For vertical interest, the queen of all vines, Clematis, bear multitudes of gorgeous blooms in every shade of purple. For later summer purples try Salvias, Verbena, Liatris, Agapanthus, Dahlias, Penstemons and Russian Sage. End the season with a purple finale of Asters and the stunning, light-catching blooms of Monkshood (Aconitum). Purple foliage is wonderful for adding drama to a garden. Used as an accent, rich, wine-purple foliage looks perfect with pastels of pink, lavender, white, silver and blue as well as with saturated hot colors of red, orange and yellow. How can any garden be complete without the rich opulence of purple? Bearded Iris | Clematis Royal Velours | Drumstick Allium with Helenium Moerheim Beauty. | |

Sister Wine Walk
By Brenda Powell
Erica and I are sisters. Even though we work together all day, we enjoy unwinding together after work. Our favorite way to do that is to pour ourselves a glass of wine and wander through one of our back yards. We look at what's new, which plants are performing well and which ones aren't. Then we give each other advice about what to plant. We end up joining our husbands and watching the sun set. On our most recent "sister wine walk", we talked about how much we enjoyed fragrance in our yards. We both love to walk by the oriental lilies in bloom and breathe in their wonderful , heady aroma or catch the scent of the honeysuckle on the breeze. So many of our favorite fragrant plants help us relax or make us feel uplifted. They add another sense to the gardening experience. And who hasn't experienced a long dormant memory just by smelling a familiar scent. Although Erica and I have some of the same fragrant plants in both our yards, the following is a list of our individual favorites: ERICA BRENDA Angel's Trumpet (Brugmansia) Pinks (Dianthus), especially Cheddar Pinks Hall's Honeysuckle Bath's Pinks, Firewitch Nicotiana alata Tinkerbelle Lilac Stargazer and Casablanca Lilies Nicotiana sylvestris Star Jasmine Lavendar Sweet Wiliam Rosemary Citrus Stock Sweet Violets Japanese Snowbell (Styrax japonica) Akebia vine
