Plant Doctor

Be sure to thoroughly clean up leaves and fruit from any plant that had disease or insect problems. Spray with Microcop for disease prevention and dormant oil for getting rid of any over-wintering insects. If a plant is consistently having problems, consider replacing the plant with something less prone to insects or disease. A happy plant, one that likes the conditions where it is planted, is often a better solution than continually spraying an unhappy plant. |

Instant Holiday Beauty by Charlotte C.
Beautiful, healthy poinsettias will begin arriving November 12th, with fresh deliveries every week until mid-December. The red varieties fill the greenhouse with warmth and cheer. Whites add elegant accents. Popular "Shimmer Surprise" has red, pink and white all mixed together. "Cortez Burgundy" is a gorgeous, deep, dark color. "Da Vinci" and "Picasso" are unique and very long lasting. We truly have a poinsettia for every decor with the "Fantasy Colors" of blue, purple, orange, gold, etc. For enduring beauty, place your poinsettias in a bright location away from heat vents or drafts. Natives of Mexico, they are happiest in warm (60-75 F) temperatures. Water only when the pot feels light and when the top of the soil feels dry. Never let your poinsettia sit in water. Prices range from $6.50 to $50. |

With an array of 10 different fun, delightful and fresh fragrances, they are sure to please the most refined palate and will make the perfect hostess gift. Also, the fine Holiday scents from Root Candles are now available, so don't hesitate to come out and stock up on your favorite scents today. Another thing to mention is our new tasty cheese ball mixes from Wind & Willow. They make a delicious appetizer or dessert that is easy to prepare and will impress all your friends and family. On the Christmas side of things, we are extremely excited to show off the fun new trends for 2008. We will enchant you with five decorated trees and accessories to match. The themes are Peacocks in Paradise, An Evening in Paris, Copper Magic, Peace, and Candy Cane Lane. But I shouldn't tell you everything; some things have to be left as a surprise. So come out and see us for some Holiday Magic, because it will definitely be in the air |
Holiday Market Place by Debbie B.
Ahhh...the scent of the holidays. There is nothing like the scent of fresh cut greens to get you in the mood for decorating. For the past 13 years I have had the joy of cutting fresh greens right off the Garland Nursery property. Douglas Fir, Incense Cedar, Giant Sequoia, Redwood and Holly to name a few. Our wreaths and garland come freshly made by local family businesses, one with which we have a 20 year relationship. They also bring us fresh cut Juniper and Noble Fir from the higher regions of Oregon. For your friends and relatives further away we do ship wreaths. A nice tidy package with a fresh green wreath a bright red hand made bow and a gift card with your greeting is enclosed. We are proud to have locally grown cut and living trees as well. If you are looking for a snowy white holiday we hand flock the tree that you pick or you can select from the trees that we already have flocked for you. Please come by and see us at our Holiday market place. Grab some cider and enjoy all the scents of the season. |
Beauty in the Winter by Karen K.
There are many ways to add interest to the garden in winter. In the often gray Pacific Northwest, the addition of winter blooms and berries can glow like gems. Witch Hazels, Daphne, Sarcococca, Winter-blooming Heather, Hellebores, Winter-blooming Camellias, Viburnum Dawn, Pansies and Primroses all provide winter flowers and often fragrance too. For berry color, try adding Holly, Cotoneaster, Viburnum, Pernettya, Nandina, Strawberry Tree, Beautyberry, Snowberry, Coralberry, Lingonberry, Crabapple, Hawthorn, or Dogwood. Consider planting conifers with gold, blue or smoky purplish foliage and plants with interesting bark. Many conifers can look like living sculptures and come in a wide array of sizes and forms. Walk around your garden in winter and see where you'd like to add more structure or where you'd want to screen out unwelcome views. Look out your windows to see where you'd like to add color. Consider providing berries and cover for birds. Keep textures in mind, contrasting glossy leaved evergreens with needled conifers, colorful twigs and graceful ornamental grasses. Replant containers in prominent places with interesting evergreen shrubs, perennials or grasses and pansies for a little color. Though more subtle than the other seasons, the garden in winter can still put on a good show. |
