Opie Oils Newsletter No. 8

Welcome to the OpieOils.co.uk Newsletter, Issue 8

Hello! :: As usual, there's been plenty going on at the Opie Fuel Depot - the biggest change being that we now have a new warehouse! We've been busy transferring stock and getting it all kitted out, so now it's all systems go.

It's been a long time in the planning, a few months in the building, but we've now got the stock in and we're ready to go. The warehouse gives us over 3 times more space, so we'll be able to hold higher stock levels and bring you new product lines... watch this space for new products and even better deals. And Kyle and Tom, our packing guys, should be able to move without tripping over each other, which has to be good news too.

Offers: On offer this month...  we've some "explosive offers" (sorry... we had to get a Guy Fawkes pun in somewhere) on a wide range of Motul oils and fluids - quality engine oil, coolant and competition-grade brake fluid; great deals with free litres or extra special pricing.

And with winter now fast approaching, perhaps your windscreen wipers could do with a refresh? We've knocked 25% off our top spec Trico Neoform beam blade wipers - they look good and work well!

Price Beater: Don't forget we'll beat any other price (delivered) on like-for-like goods available in stock online! If you've seen a better price online in the UK (including VAT and delivery), just give us a call and we'll give you a better deal. The only exception we have to make is eBay - auction sales can be grey imports / end of line discounts / old stock whilst all our stock is sourced either direct from the manufacturer or from the official UK importer.

Tech Spot: In this issue, we look at how engine oils lose viscosity with use.  You can learn about what factors contribute to this process and a little about the chemistry involved in this month's article.

New Red Line Oils: There's been an expansion to the top-end engine oil range from Red Line Oils - we'll have the new products soon. Look out for a separate announcement and special introductory pricing later in the month.

Competition Results: Our competition to win £150's worth of cleaning and detailing products proved popular - the answers and winners details can be found in this issue if you've missed them!

Motorsport & Sponsored Drivers: October saw the end of most motor racing series and we're proud to say that there's been plenty of success for Opie sponsored drivers and riders in a huge variety of different motor sports, from drifting to endurance racing, drag racing to rally. Title winners include Century Motorsport's Nathan Freke in the Ginetta G50 Championship, Alick Kerr in Class 12 of the Scottish Rally Championship and Simon Tilling in the Castle Combe Super GT Championship (that's Simon and his Radical SR3 in the newsletter title image!). Well done to these guys and many more! We'd intended to put an end of season round up in to this issue of the newsletter, but it started to get a bit big :-) We'll be sending out a separate update soon... and if you've got any news for us, please get it to us ASAP so that we can include you.

As ever, if there's anything you'd like us to look in to stocking or if you have any feedback on any aspect of our service, please do get in touch!

Our email address is sales@opieoils.co.uk, phone is 01209 215164.

To all our customers, thank you for your support and positive feedback; it's much appreciated. Facebook users can leave a review of our service on our Facebook fan page. You can also upload photos of your car or bike to our gallery by posting them to our Facebook Fan Page wall.

'til next time,

Technical Article - Why oils lose viscosity with use

Our technical article this month is about how engine oils lose viscosity with use. Engine oils have a hard life and over time will break down - known as shearing.

The viscosity your oil started with when it was fresh in your engine will not be the same after only 1000 miles in your engine.

But not all oils are created equal; some are more resistant to this process of "shearing" than others.

If you hear us talk about an oil's ability to stay in grade, then we're referring to how well, during the course of its life, an oil resists "shearing" and stays at its initial "fresh from the bottle" viscosity grade... the single most important factor in understanding how well an oil will continue to do its job over time!

Read on to learn about what factors contribute to this process and a little about the chemistry involved... [ Read more - PDF download ]

New Red Line Oils

We've been very impressed with the quality of the Red Line oils for a while now, and are happy to announce an expansion of their product range to cover a variety of new viscosities.
Red Line 10w 60
Coming later this month we'll be able to offer you the same Red Line fully synthetic ester formula in the following new viscosities. All are available in US quarts and gallons, but we'll package them up with a special price to a more useful size of 1 US Gallon + 1 US quart = 4.73 litres...
  • 0W-20 - the lightest car engine oil available from Red Line - Increased fuel economy and improved wear at cold start if a 0W-20 oil is recommended for your car, or for use in competition for qualifying runs where you wish to minimise internal drag on engine components

  • 0W-30 - a top quality, fuel-economy oil - meets ACEA A5/B5 specifications

  • 0W-40 - Recommended for many Audi, water-cooled Porsche, and Mercedes-Benz applications / meets ACEA A3/B4 specifications

  • 5W-50 - For performance engines in high-temperature conditions - meets ACEA A3/B4 specifications

  • 10W-60 - for newer BMW M-cars applications like E46 M3 and E60 M5 - meets ACEA A3/B4 specifications

Guess the Car Competition

If you got either answer right (see below)... well done! The winner was Philip Anderson, a member of the Mitsubish Lancer Register forum.

Our runners up were Anna M (Honda Civic Forum UK), Rob R (Bike Tech Forums) and Feraz S (South East Lotus Owners Club) who each win a £50 Opie Oils voucher.

The Answers!

As many of you guessed, the answers were:

  • Aston Martin for the make of car (it's an Aston Martin DB4 Volante)
  • Honda for the motorbike (it's a Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade 2009)

Philip wins all the goodies below:

Our car competition prize - £150 of products from Muc-Off, Bilt Hamber and Meguiars

Thanks to everyone who entered. Once again, we had plenty of correct answers and some lively debate on the forums... but very few COMPLETELY correct answers for those who had a go at guessing the make AND model.

In fact, hardly any of you who had a go at the model of the mystery car got it right. It was actually an Aston Martin DB4 Volante (not a DB5 or DB6 as was commonly guessed) photographed in the British Racing Drivers Club car park when we were at Silverstone in September.

If you answered correctly... well done, you were one of a handful! But the bike guesses were nearly all spot on :-)

Thanks to all who entered - and look out for our next competition!

Silkolene Tenacious Gear SprayAnd Finally...

It's amazing what you find tucked around the back of things when you have a good clear up.

In transferring stock to the new warehouse, we found a few oddities and "rarities".

Our favourite was the SILKOLENE TENACIOUS OPEN GEAR SPRAY, complete with Silkolene's old Concorde logo... yes, Silkolene lubricants were used in Concorde's Rolls Royce Olympus turbojet engines; oil technology that's now found its way in to products such as Silkolene Pro S.

In case you're interested... Tenacious Open Gear Spray is a gear lube and "deposits a highly tenacious coating, resisting 'fling' ". All that and a proud announcement on the lid that it's Ozone Friendly, too.

If you've got something you'd like us to include in our next newsletter (or indeed, if you have any suggestions or feedback), let us know with an email to sales@opieoils.co.uk

Until then, safe motoring!
