Firstly, a big welcome to our new subscribers!
We're mailing quite a few more people now than when we started our newsletters back in February. We hope you find it an interesting read and feedback is always welcome. Would you like previous issues available online? Let us know; we'll put them on our web site if there's enough interest. There's a feedback form on our web site, or just drop us an email to sales@opieoils.co.uk
Our "guess the car" / "guess the bike" competition proved very popular. Thanks to everyone who entered and for the interesting little discussions on forums up and down the land. More info a little further on (and another competition later in the month) ...
New products this month have mainly been synthetic motorcycle oils from US manufacturers Redline and Amsoil. They're not the cheapest, but they're great quality; you could actually save money by switching to a synthetic oil and extending your oil change intervals. We've got 15% off plus club discounts of 10% or more until the end of this week (Friday 3rd July). More details below and on our web site.
We'd hoped to be selling Silkolene Pro S in the new 5w-30 grade during June, but there's been a slight production delay. For anyone who's pre-ordered, bear with us, it really is coming soon!
Finally, we're pleased to be able to start work on our new warehouse! Estimated completion is mid September. The extra space should allow us to stock an even greater variety of oils and fluids, helping us to keep our place as the UK's No.1 independent supplier of automotive oils and lubricants.
To all our customers, thank you for your support; it's much appreciated. Suggestions for improvement or ideas for new product ranges are always welcome!

Guess the car / motorbike competition
We've
drawn the winning entry and the answers are on our web site now.
Lots
of correct answers, lots of not so correct ones; everything from a Ford Focus
to a Lamborghini Diablo! We did only need the correct manufacturer... which was
just as well, because a lot of you guessed the manufacturer correctly but got
the model wrong. Our winner got it spot on though! And an impressive number of
people spotted the mystery motorbike wheel too.
If
you've not heard from us, then you haven't won. Sorry*. We would've loved to
have been able to give every correct answer a prize, but frankly, we'd be
bankrupt. Take a trip over to our web site to see the answers and
details of our consolation discount - 15% off (plus club member's discounts) on all cleaning , polishing and detailing products, plus bike
aerosols and workshop items from Silkolene, Castrol and Motul. Get your skates
on though... this offer runs through until Friday 3rd July only.
Look
out for the next competition, coming in a couple of weeks. We've got a rather
good prize lined up... we "want one of those" and reckon you will too!
* The
lucky winner was Richard Shore from Bedfordshire, who will be spending the next
couple of weekends cleaning and polishing his car... think of that when you're
relaxing around a BBQ and know that every cloud has a silver lining.
Congratulations Richard :-)

New on the Shelves
This month we welcome the following new oils to the Opie Oil Clan:
Mobil 1 Supersyn 5w-50 Rally Formula
Our very first 5w-50 oil - we had to create a whole new category on our web site for it. Mobil 1 5W-50 is especially suited for high speed and "severe service" and also boasts the Porsche A40 approval (not many of those around). We have, however, just been advised of an imminent Mobil price rise (weakness of the £ we presume) so it's only our initial stock that's at the current web site price (£46.99 / £42.29 members for 5 litres)
A new range of Red Line synthetic 2 stroke oils and 4 stroke motorcycle oils, plus synthetic gear oils, fork oils and coolant
The choice of many professional race teams - amazing quality and durability. The Red Line oils do come in at the top end of the scale price-wise, but with 15% off until the end of the week - plus member's discounts for a 20% - 25% discount on RRP - they're a bit easier on the pocket!
Our existing range of Red Line oils for cars are of the same excellent quality.

Amsoil synthetic 4 stroke and 2 stroke oils
Extending our range of motorcycle oils further, we're now stocking the premium synthetic oils from the Amsoil stable. We now offer a selection of motorcycle oils second to none! As for the Red Line - 15% off if you order by the end of the week in addition to club members discounts.

Coming Soon - Silkolene Pro S Race 5w-30
Amongst performance car enthusiasts and motorsport competitors, Silkolene Pro S has proved our biggest seller. And so it should be... it's a fantastic quality oil at a competitive price!
To date, Pro S has been available in 2 viscosities - 5w-40 and 10w-50 - but with the increasing trend towards lower viscosities, 5w-30 is now a common manufacturers' recommendation, particularly for Fords and the latest generation Japanese cars.
Yes, we asked for it, Silkolene listened and it'll be in our warehouse some time in July. Pale amber in colour, it's not quite as funky as the purple Pro S 10w-50, but if your car requires a 5w-30 oil it's the best Pro S yet!
Competing? Pro S 5w-30 could also give some performance benefits over thicker viscosities for sprints, short races and qualifying laps. And what's more, it CAN also be used on the road!
Pre-register your interest here - the first few pallets will be at a special promotional price, with priority given to anyone who has pre-registered.

Alick Kerr - Scottish Rally Championship
Alick Kerr in action in the Scottish Rally Championship - photo courtesy of LindsayPhotoSportOpie sponsored driver Alick Kerr continues to impress in his Subaru Impreza, with last weekend's outing seeing the best result of his rally career to date. Finishing seventh outright and third in class from a field of over 130 in the RSAC Scottish Rally, the team had a great day in the forests of Dumfries and Galloway. This is Alick's first season in the car and there are clearly great things to come as driver and team get further rally miles under their belts. As co-driver Drew Sturrock says "For a virtually standard car to go so well against some newer and more powerful machinery is no mean feat"!
There's a full press release from the Alick Kerr Motorsport team on our web site.

Tech article - The importance of the additive package Or - why a cheap oil is cheaper than a not so cheap oil
Although the base-stock of an oil will be a major determining factor in the lubrication quality of an oil, chemical additives play a major part in making sure that it does all that it is supposed to do. Note that we're talking here about the additives that the chemists who determine the original oil blend specify; we're not talking about "miracle" additives that claim to restore your engine; we don't stock or recommend any such products.
The chemical additive package of an oil is just as important to ensuring the quality of a lubricant as is the particular base-stock used. Not all oils are created equal in this respect. Many "own brand" oils simply don't have the same quality of additives as their more expensive cousins - a better quality additive package does cost more, and that's reflected in the retail price.
Our technical article this month explores the different roles that engine oil additives have - everything including modifying the viscosity of an oil, retarding engine wear, preventing corrosion, preventing sludge build up and extending the life of the oil.
