March Greetings!
Like many of you living in Alberta, I can't believe it's March, we've had the first day of spring, the clocks have gone forward, and when I look out the window, the temperatures are well below normal and the snow is flying. Will real spring ever arrive other than what's written on the calendar?
St Paddy's Day cats!
The earthquake and tsunami in Japan has been heart rendering. We will be collecting donations in our jar this month to help the victims of this devastating tragedy.
Grant is preparing to attend the Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival next week. This year's theme is Spain and fortified wines. I'm sure he will come back with some wonderful new choices for you to pick up at the store.
We have some activities planned for May and June which you won't want to miss out on. So check out the Upcoming Events section.
You won't see me in the store for a little while. I'm working at home with my foot on a pillow following surgery - hobbling with crutches and not able to stand for too long yet. I hope to be back sometime later in April.

What's new in Whisky & Rum Balvenie Caribbean Rum Cask- 14 year old, 43% A new addition to the permanent Balvenie range. Lovely bright gold color. Layers of sweetness (the characteristic Balvenie honey, along with vanilla fudge, nougat and rich toffee) peppered with dried spice and a hint of tropical fruit (papaya, guava, tangerine). Great viscosity with good grip on the finish. A very solid effort and the price is right.
Advanced Malt Advocate magazine rating: 89

What's new in Vodka & Gin G Vine - a unique grape based gin from France will be your new summer cocktail. Read more especially when splashed with a deliciously seductive new tonic water - Q Tonic.
Q Tonic is a superior tonic water, made with organic agave and handpicked Peruvian quinine instead of high-fructose corn syrup, synthetic quinine, and artificial preservatives like the big guys. As a result, Q Tonic tastes sharper and cleaner (like tonic water was intended), has 60% fewer calories, and is a much better complement for top shelf spirits. And, the bottle looks pretty snazzy too. It's not cheap, but right now when you purchase a bottle of G Vine Gin, we give you a free 750ml bottle of Q Tonic ! (While supplies last). It is also sold in convenience smaller bottles in 4 packs.

Rx from Dr. J.
2007 Petrolo Torrione
Antonio Galloni's review of this wine in the Wine Advocate states that this wine could be easily mistaken for a wine that costs twice as much. I agree 100% with that statement. Medium to full bodied, the wine is silky smooth and is beautifully balanced. Red berries, plums, and cherries abound in this food friendly wine. Its bright acidity makes the wine a great match for a wide variety of foods.
Grape Variety: Sangiovese
Wine Spectator Score: 94 points, and was the #37 wine of the Top 100 Wines of 2009
Serve With: Pizza, chicken, rabbit, red meats, pastas

Feature Article -- Grant's Rant

Let's Talk Restaurant Wine Pricing......
Restaurants continue to gouge customers on the price of their wines.
Now, we all understand that everyone has to make a buck - but when restaurants triple the price of their wines, that is absolute craziness!
