Mid Summer. Finally - hot. As I write this, we are in the midst of Festival Season here in Edmonton. Capital Ex, Indy, Taste of Edmonton, Heritage Festival, Fringe Festival, Folk Festival - a fun and busy time of the year.
Once again this year, we are one of the sponsoring boutique liquor stores of "The Taste of Wine" in Churchill Square at The Taste of Edmonton. The line up of wines this year include 15 terrific value wines ranging from a sparkling Cava from Spain, a couple of delicious roses, representation of several white varietals and some great reds. There's even an organic Sangria which has proven so popular it's in short supply around the city right now. Pop down and visit the wine tent before it closes on the evening of August 1st. For a complete list of the wines featured - read more. All are available for sale at the store while supplies last.
Wasn't that a party? Thanks to everyone who joined in at the store to celebrate our 3rd anniversary on the July 1st Long Weekend. Lots of door prizes were won, discounts ranging from 10-90% were available offered, pieces of cake enjoyed and wines tasted!
Still time...... BORDEAUX 2009 FUTURES - 2009 vintage is expected to surpass that of 2005. We have sourced out some excellent price- value-ratio wines that would be a great addition to anyone's cellar. They aren't the priciest but they are well worth considering. These wines not bought on futures will be MINIMUM double the price on store shelves. We are offering a few skus for sale. Please inquire if you are seriously interested. We will send you the list. Email info@aligrawineandspirits.com
Last month we asked..... Got Corks???
Natural cork is from the bark of the cork oak tree - a completely renewable, sustainable and recyclable resource. Once harvested from the tree, it is made into various cork products including wine corks for bottled wine. But what happens to the cork after the bottle has been finished? Well, 6 BILLION (yes that's with a B) go into landfills! Aligra Wine & Spirits is asking our customers and friends to bring in their corks! We have also begun approaching restaurants and bars to collect them for us too. All corks from Taste of Edmonton will be donated to our worthy cause! Our intention is to research a number of projects where these corks can be recycled and reused for something purposeful. We will keep you informed and welcome any ideas you may have on the subject..
Enjoy summer and take in some of the city's festivals while out playing in the sunshine.

Rx from "Dr. J. "
Our Dr. J. is away on holidays and assignment in Australia. Catch him in next month's newsletter.
Grant and I have been doing some homework though. We have discovered some of the Cameron Hughes wines. He's the clever guy who realized there was a glut in the wine market during the recent economic downturn, bought up some premium winemaker's juice and bottles it under his own labels at substantial discounts to maintain the anonymity and therefore integrity of the original winery. Lot 136, a 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley was excellent. Rich, dark fruit, delicate French oak accompanied by blackberries and cassis. It is balanced and sophisticated for a wine selling for $25.99.
Pairs well with lamb, steak. We carry a selection of his wines in the store. For more information on Cameron Hughes visit www.chwine.com

Wine Festivals - A Great "Mini" Vacation Sometimes, it's really hard to get away from our everyday routines and commitments for a week or two at a time. Research shows, however, that it's very good for our physical and mental health to remove ourselves from work and take a time out. even if it's for a long weekend. I did just that a few weeks ago. Running a business means vacations are rare and extremely precious. So, when a friend in the wine business suggested I join her on a trip to the California Wine Festival in Santa Barbara for a few days, I jumped at the chance ( after checking with my partner of course!) What could be nicer than a long weekend in the California sun, sipping wines and tasting great food with a girlfriend? Oh, and did I mention shopping at outlet malls? After all, our Canadian dollar is actually worth something these days! We booked flights to LAX on a seat saver fare, rented a reasonably priced car to get around, booked a fabulous 2 bedroom condo online that cost us less than the hotel rooms we were checking out, and purchased our VIP tickets to all the wine events and set off on our adventure.
The California Wine Festival in Santa Barbara is now in it's 7th year. It is a 3 day celebration of wine, food and music in one of the most beautiful areas of the state. The events on Thursday and Friday take place in the evening allowing lots of time to enjoy the surrounding areas - whether it's visiting wineries in the Santa Ynez valley,(which we did), strolling the charming town's shops in Santa Barbara (which we also did) or relaxing on the picturesque beaches. Thursday night was Old Spanish Nights - an outdoor tapas and tasting at the Casa de la Geurra Adobe Courtyard in Santa Barbara. Latin music, flamenco dancers, 35 plus wineries and beverage purveyors and delicious food samples made for a fabulous introduction to this festival. In chatting with some of the participants, we were fascinated that people had travelled from Arizona, Alabama, southern California, and Washington State just to attend this wine festival. It appeared that we were the only two lucky Canadians!
Friday night casual elegance met retro-cool at the Sunset Rare and Reserve Wine Tasting. It was held at romantic Chase Palm Park under the stars near the charming old-world carousel and right near the ocean, listening to "dry martini" style live blues band. Extremely rare and limited reserve wines are matched with gourmet appetizers from top local chefs, artisan cheeses even chocolate dipped strawberries. Many wines tasted are not available in Canada so it was a real treat to sample some of the best that California has to offer. (We hope to see some here within the next few months).
Saturday was an all afternoon affair at The Beachside Wine & Food Festival. Here is the quintessential California experience - wine, food, sea, sand, and regae/soca music right on the beach! Over 80 wineries pouring hundreds of premium wines, gourmet appetizers, and exotic treats. Although over 4000 people attended this event, the crowd was relaxed, having fun and line ups were few, rest areas and shade was plentiful in the hot sunshine. We met so many interesting people who claim that out of all of the wine festivals held around the USA, this one is their favourite. Sunday, we relaxed, shopped a bit, dined out in a charming outside restaurant and heading back to Canada on Monday feeling happy, refreshed and ready to get back to work......until the next wine festival comes along! Volume 3 Issue 5
July/August 2010 |
Alison & Grant's Wine Picks under $30
Wall Cellar 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa, California
This wine had almost textbook varietal characteristics from its dark
garnet colour to its aromas of blackberry, black cherry, smoke, and a
touch of green pepper. Flavours of black cherry and grilled herbs made
this wine lively and fresh. Smooth tannins led to a peppery bite as you
swallowed the wine, which left a pleasant, lingering aftertaste of
herbs, berries, and spice.
De Bortoli Traminer Riesling - Australia
For those who like some obvious grapey sweetness in their whites, Sacred
Hill is first choice. Topical Gewurztraminer roses and musk aromatics,
with sweet and juicy flavours all finely nestled within a soft palate. If you like your white wine a little sweeter
than the norm, this one would suit well! This
refreshing, aromatic blend has golden-green glints with lychee,
pineapple, wild honey, rose petals, lemon oil and exotic spice!
Cocktail of the Month
Moscow Mule
2 oz. vodka slice of lime mint sprig top up with ginger beer
Try this refreshing drink at your next gathering of friends on the patio!
