What about Beer?
From the summery lime beers that were so popular a few months ago, to the more full bodies winter brews......
The Howe Sound Brewery's Winter Ale has been popular during the colder winter months. Father John's Winter Ale is a fantastically warming, well spiced brew that comes in a nice 1 litre swing-top bottle. It has a dark amber colour with a loose head, a rich malty aroma with an obvious spiciness. This full-bodied Ale has a very malty profile that is the backbone for all the other seasonal flavours that are added. Ginger, nutmeg, vanilla, and cinnamon are the spices that give this warming beer bags of flavour, but it is kept well in balance, and not one really dominates. There are also definite notes of the other fermentable additions, like molasses, brown sugar and honey; they give the beer a depth which compliments the malt and spices, but cleverly don't add too much sweetness!
Wild Rose Cherry Porter brewed using only the plumpest, ripest whole BC cherries, each glass of Cherry Porter is lush and creamy with a fruity aroma. Rich and sensual, the flavour is reminiscent of Black Forest cake with sweet chocolate notes and a slightly smoky character from the roasted malts. Originally emerging in the early 1700s, at the height of Britain's Industrial Revolution, the Porter beer style virtually disappeared by the mid-70s. As part of the new generation of brewers, the team at Wild Rose Brewery has created Cherry Porter as a variation on this classic style.
Innis & Gunn Triple Matured The beer has been matured in 150 selected oak barrels and it has been aged for a total of 99 days. It's brewed from Optic malt and chocolate malt made from barley grown in the Scottish borders with Goldings hops from the fields of Kent. At the end of the brewing process, the beer is run into American white oak barrels and left to mature. When it has absorbed sufficient oak character from the wood, it's transferred to a marrying tun and left for further maturation. Beers from different barrels are then blended. The beer has an appealing chestnut colour with a massive nose of oak, chocolate, rich malt and peppery hops. The palate is complex with juicy malt, oak, chocolate, slightly sour fruit and hop resins. The finish bittersweet with oak, honey, spicy hops and sour fruit - the slight hint of sourness will appeal to lovers of Belgian beer while the oak character with naturally please whisky drinkers.

OK, so it is January, and like millions of others, you probably over- indulged over the holidays and woke up on January 1st, 2010 with all kinds of resolutions: Lose weight, exercise more, spend more time communicating with loved ones, spend less time texting, eat more fruits and vegetables, drink less or give up drinking all together, be a better person, bla bla bla.
It's mid January, how's it all working for you???
Experts tell us it takes at least 21 days to re-programme our brain into a new habit that will continue to work for us into the future. Don't get me wrong, there are many good habits we need to adopt, myself included, but for what it's worth, (and I know we have what may appear to be an ulteriour motive in all this), adding a glass of wine to your list of good things to do for yourself this year, is, well, a good thing to do!
One of the best documented effects of moderate red wine consumption (2 drinks per day for men and one for women) is the effect on the prevention of cardiovascular disease.
Unlike other alcoholic beverages, red wine is a very complex beverage. It contains thousands of phytochemical compounds extracted from grape skins during the fermentation process, including resveratrol. Without getting too technical, red wine is a unique beverage with extraordinary anti-oxidant potential and provides a more positive impact on health than any other form of alcohol. It is the only type of alcohol that doesn't alter our blood clotting capacity, very important for cardiovascular health.
Research has shown that people who drink excessive amounts of strong alcohol (7 or more ounces per day) increase by 18 times their risk of developing esophagus, oral cavity, and larynx cancer compared to those who do not consume alcohol at all. Smoking increases this risk to 44 times higher! However, moderate consumers of red wine have not been shown to have the same risk.
So let's review those resolutions once more. Yes, we'll exercise more, eat more fruits and vegetables, AND enjoy a glass of healthy, red wine while communicating more with our loved ones! You are on your way to becoming a slimmer, healthier more loving individual in 2010.

In Celtic cultures, Mead was believed to enhance virility and fertility, while also contributing supposed aphrodisiac qualities. As a result, Mead quickly found its way into Irish wedding ceremonies. In fact, the term "honeymoon" is believed to have stemmed from the Irish tradition of newlyweds drinking honey wine everyday for one full moon (a month) after their weddings.
We carry both Maxwell Honey Mead and En Sante Honey Mead. | |
