November. In the northern hemisphere, this can seem like the longest, dullest, darkest month of the year. Endless months of winter are looming ahead, the shortest day of the year is on the horizon. Less than 10 hours of daylight each day. What is there to get excited about?
LOTS! We may only get less than 10 hours of daylight, but for the most part in Alberta it's sunny and bright! For the sports enthusiasts, hockey and basketball is in full swing, football season draws to an close with the Grey Cup Game (in Calgary) at the end of the month, and the World Series is on!
For the culture vultures, numerous plays, operas, symphony, ballet. and live theatre performances abound in the city.
For those that enjoy the Food & Wine Scene, restaurants often offer special "Table D'hote" menus in November to attract new customers. Plus there are all kinds of fun things going on for you to get off the couch and go out, meet some new people and learn things you never knew about!

What about Beer?
Black Tree Dark Ale
Black Tree Dark Ale, a beer to benefit B.C. Fire ReLeaf, a program of the non-profit group Tree Canada to help replace forests throughout British Columbia that were destroyed during the wildfires over the summer. "Pours black, thin white head, good retention, sweet malty aroma with a fresh hoppiness that reminds one of English ale. Very malty and sweet with a slight hoppy bite, chocolatly finish".
Westmalle Dubbel
A Trappist beer from Belgium
Hazy light amber with large white head, medium persistence and nice lacing. Aroma of citrus and black pepper, faint spiciness in the background. Taste starts with citrus, coriander and pepper, progresses to a slight bitterness which is long lasting. Nice example of the style.

Feature Article The Great Wine Race? Is it still so great?
One of the craziest and most successful wine promotions ever has got to be the annual release of Beaujolais Nouveau.
Beaujolais Primeur (it's real name, since the wine is released immediately after the harvest and not the following spring), has been a tradition of the early 20th century France that has carried on into the 21st. While the race has lost some of it's original cachet and regulations have been changed, the release of this wine continues to generate sales worldwide of over 70 million bottles a year!
Before the trade in wine was regulated back in the late 1930's, this November phenomenon was a great excuse for people in the French city of Lyon to hit the bars and guzzle the new wines with gusto. Rules for it's release were changed in the 1950's so more than locals could enjoy it, and a mid November release date - the third Thursday of November - was established for what officially became known as "Beaujolais Nouveau".
The wine is made from hand-harvested Gamay noir a jus blanc grapes. It is vinified via carbonic maceration (whole berry fermentation) which gives the wine it's characteristic fresh, vibrant and fruity character with very low tannins. If it's poorly made, it will taste like raspberry jam at best. Whatever the quality, it does not improve with age. It is meant to be drunk within 3 months, served chilled and gulped rather than sipped.
So why the great race? The first race occured in the 1950's when British wine merchants would descend on the Beaujolais region, load up their lorries and race back to the Calais ferry at the stroke of midnight. Being the first to arrive with it on their shelf brought great recognition to the merchant. The tradition gathered momentum and more and more elaborate schemes evolved for getting the wine into the U.K. as close as possible to that midnight deadline on the third Thursday of November. Fast motorbikes, military jets and even vintage cars were put to the task. In remoter parts of the world, elephants, rickshaws and even runners have played their parts.
Nowadays, rules have changed to allow the wines to be distributed worldwide at their final destinations in time for the appointed midnight hour release. Japan is the biggest consumer, followed by the Americans.
Beaujolais Nouveau often gets a bad rap, being described as "Kool Aid wine" or "lightly fermented alcoholized fruit juice". It's great commercial success has often been at the expense of Beaujolais' finer wines, which should not be underestimated.
So, keep the race alive and do your bit! Raise a glass of Beaujolais Nouveau on the third weekend of November with some friends. Afterall, it is a fun story and, should you need one, a great excuse for a party!
AVAILABLE IN STORE ON NOVEMBER 20TH.

GADGETS & GIZMOS
Yeah! The folks at Vinturi have been listening! For the thousands of Vinturi owners enjoying this amazing aerator for their wines, Vinturi is now selling the Tower separately. Recently, they came out with a "Deluxe Vinturi" which includes the tower, but those of us that already have just the aerator, didn't want to buy the whole set again. Now you don't have to. They will be in the store very soon.
For the Wine connoisseur who has everything....here's something he(or she) likely doesn't have.
KICK THE BUCKET!
Winesceptre - invented by a restaurant owner in Europe, the Winesceptre is an innovative, elegant and simple way to maintain the optimal temperature of a chilled bottle of wine after it is opened and while it is served at the table.
Placing wine in ice buckets, causes the temperature of the wine to drop too drastically resulting in the wine losing it's bouquet and much of it's taste. The Winesceptre eliminates the need for ice buckets, avoids dripping wine bottles, and wet labels. Made from pure metal which does not impart any taste or smell to the wine, Winesceptre is stored in the freezer until needed.
These are EXCLUSIVE to Aligra Wine & Spirits

Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is hand-harvested from vines in the Marlborough vineyard, gently separated from the stems and fermented in small, traditional open-top vats. These vats are hand-plunged to extract colour and tannin, and after pressing the wine is aged in French oak barrels. Fruit-driven in style with soft tannins and spicy oak.
Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc is grown in the Marlborough vineyard on stony riverbed terraces, gently pressed and fermented in stainless steel tanks to give intense passionfruit and gooseberry fruit characters. The wine is fruit-driven in style, with complexity from lees ageing for several months in stainless steel tanks before bottling. This wine is a classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc with intense flavours and crisp acid in a dry style.
