Aligra Wine & Spirits
October 2009

Autumn is here.  We enjoyed some of our best summer weather in September here in Alberta! Record-breaking temperatures one week, better than we had in July and August followed by the more usual, chilly weather we expect at this time of year.  However, the snow and below zero temperatures this week were not a welcome surprise!

Talk Like A Pirate Day on September 19th was a real hit in the store.  We all dressed like Pirates (and a wench), we even had a Rum Privateer.  Customers were treated to samples of 13 different specialty rums - 3 choices for a twoonie with proceeds going to our Run for the Cure Breast Cancer Charity.

Pirates on the ship

We are quite likely the only Wine & Spirits store in the world with a bona fide pirate ship right outside our door, so we took full advantage of a photo opportunity!  Mark the date for next year as it will be  even bigger and better!

The annual Top 25 Wines Under $25.00 list published by Wine Access Magazine was released this week.  Proudly we have 21 of the 22 available in Alberta already in the store!  There's some real gems and we have identifed them on the shelves for your shopping convenience.

We have some well priced wines perfect for Thanksgiving Dinner this coming weekend.  From roses, and bubblies to rieslings and pinot noirs for that much anticipated turkey dinner.  Why not try some  late harvest wines or maple liqueur with your pumpkin pie this year?

We wish you a very happy and safe Thanksgiving Weekend.

What about Beer?

Last month we talked about all the Lime Beers and I suggested they would make a good  Beer Can Chicken dish on the Barbeque........well, we tried it a few weeks ago...DELICIOUS!  Very moist, tender and a subtle citrus taste.  Give it a try.

ALLEY CAT PUMPKIN PI - a seasonal treat lightly spiced with pumpkin pie spices.

 INNIS & GUNN TRIPLE MATURED

Matured in 150 selected oak barrels,  it has been aged for a total of 99 days. It's brewed from Optic malt and chocolate malt made from barley grown in the Scottish borders with Goldings hops from the fields of Kent. At the end of the brewing process, the beer is run into American white oak barrels and left to mature. When the beer has absorbed sufficient oak character from the wood, it's transferred to a marrying tun and left for further maturation. Beers from different barrels are then blended. The beer has an appealing chestnut colour with a massive nose of oak, chocolate, rich malt and peppery hops. The palate is complex with juicy malt, oak, chocolate, slightly sour fruit and hop resins. The finish bittersweet with oak, honey, spicy hops and sour fruit.

Feature Article

 ORIGIN UNKNOWN:
Small Canadian Wine Makers are crying "Sour Grapes"

Recently, there has been much discussion in the Canadian wine industry about  "Cellared in Canada Wines". Canada has a growing wine industry in both B.C. and Ontario, however, it seems that some wines we are purchasing off the shelves in liquor stores in the Canadian Wine section aren't Canadian at all!

Jancis Robinson, renowned international Wine writer, was recently interviewed on CBC Radio.  She calls the "Cellared in Canada" labels "very misleading" and "a mealy mouthed term for what should be called a blend of imported wines".  She goes on to say it "gives a superficial Canadianess to wines and it's not good for the international image."  "The worst thing is it tarnishes all proper Canadian wines. Why should the rest of the world take Canadian wines seriously?"

John Peller, of Andrew Peller Wines, one of Canada's largest producers disagrees.  30 - 40% of Peller Wines fall under the cellared in Canada label and he maintains most people are not concerned where wine comes from but that it is of good quality at a good price.  These wines are "blended to a certain taste profile" and contain, by law a minimum of 30% Ontario grapes.  The remaining 70% are sourced from "quality" vineyards in Chile, Argentina, France or Italy. Wines "cellared" in B.C. need  0% B.C. juice in the bottle! and can therefore, contain 100 % foreign grapes from various origins.

Wine labelling laws in Canada unfortunately do not require wineries to indicate the origin of the grapes like European wines do.

The Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) is Canada's symbol of quality wine. It is similar to other regulatory systems in place in such countries as France (AOC), Italy (DOC), and Germany (QmP), and ensures the consumer of high quality Canadian wine. The VQA symbol on a bottle of Canadian wine assures the consumer of quality production, content, varietal percentage, appellation, and vintage.
The VQA standard is government sanctioned and is regulated in Ontario by VQA Ontario and in British Columbia by the British Columbia Wine Institute (BCWI). Ontario and British Columbia are the only two regions in Canada that currently produce wines that meet the VQA standard.

Aligra Wine & Spirits is major supporter of fine quality Canadian wines offering one of the largest selections of B.C. wines available in Alberta .You will soon be seeing more and more fabulous wines from small wineries on our B.C. shelves very soon.
Also, we have moved all "Cellared in Canada" wines, from our Canadian section, to our "Origin Unknown" section so as to respect the 100% Canadian wines.

What do you think about all of this?  Does it matter to you that you are drinking 100% Canadian wine? or is price point your driving factor?

GADGETS & GIZMOS

DECANTUS DELUXE WINE AERATOR
The Decantus Deluxe Wine Aerator is a new, unique by-the-glass wine aerator and decanting system. The Decantus Deluxe is sinuous and graceful, with two handles for easy handling while pouring. The Decantus Deluxe Wine Aerator utilizes the Bernoulli effect where the reduced pressure of a stream of fluid (wine) draws an air flow through diagonal thin tubes inside the Decantus. The 2 1/2" wide mouth on top and larger liquid capacity of the top reservoir bowl makes pouring into Decantus Wine Aerator easy to use.
