February, the shortest month on the calendar, but the longest month in a Canadian winter....
We finished January with a well-attended and fun 1st Annual Robbie Burns Whisky Tasting on January 26th. Thank you to all the active participants offering "Toasts to the Haggis, Toast to the Lassies, Ode to Robbie Burns and a rousing rendition of Auld Lang Syne." No one managed to guess our mystery malt for the door prize, but everyone agreed, we must do it again next year! Our single malt offerings are expanding weekly and this week we are bringing in the most delicious Macallan 18 year old. The commemorative Robbie Burns single malt celebrating the 250th Anniversary of his birth is still available.
We also held another successful Wine Appreciation Class through Metro Continuing Education let by Sommelier Heather Kingston on February 17th. The next one is scheduled for April 07, so if you haven't signed up, better register soon as these classes sell out very quickly.
Looking forward with hope that spring is around the corner soon, we are planning several more in store events and plan on bringing you something each month. Here are some highlights for the next few months:
April 21 Tuesday White Nights- Change your perception of white wines; learn and tast 8 different varietals - pick your favourites in time for summer patio sipping.
May 12 Tuesday Meukow Cognacs - Join us for an informative evening with the Meukow representative from France. Tastings and door prizes.
June 17 Wednesday Bubbles & Sparkles - Learn the difference between Champagne & Sparkling wines. Taste Spanish Cava, Italian Prosecco, Champagne from France and several other great sparklings.

RUM NEWS etc...
Legendario Sweet Elixir Cuban Rum is literally flying out the door. With a distinctive molasses sweetness, this rum is easily consumed as many would a cognac. If you aren't sure, drop by and we'll give you a sample taste. With a bottle on your bar, it's like taking a quick trip to the warm sunny beaches of Cuba with every sip.
Juan Santos 7 year coffee infused Rum arriving this week. Made with Columbian coffee and sugar cane, it is sure to join the ranks of "best rum I ever had" category.
Zaya Rum is rich, more on the full-bodied side, well balanced and has a fantastic spicy finish. This limited production rum hails from the island of Trinidad. It's aged in oak barrels for 12 years before release and made from the sugar cane juice itself, not molasses. The result is a truly decadent rum with a dominant butterscotch, slight sweet vanilla flavor and a deep earthy background. There is a classic rum after taste but no burn what-so-ever on the way down. The finish is warm and leaves you with a feeling of cinnamon in the mouth. Tequila Flavoured tequilas have become more and more popular of late. We presently carry Patron Citronage, X.O. Cafe, Tekali Coffee Tequila and Agavero liqueur.
Two great new ones to try... Herencia's Almendrado almond flavoured tequila and 1921 Cream of Tequila liqueur.
Senor Premium Almendrado Rich amber hue. Almond extract nose. A rich, glycerous entry leads to a lightly sweet, full body with delicate marzipan and cocoa flavors. Finishes with a long, spicy, almond nut fade and a tequila dimension that provides a good, balancing bite to the sweetness. A wonderful alternative to Amaretto.
1921 Tequila Cream is a blend of 1921 Tequila Blanco and cream, exhibiting flavours of cinnamon, nutmeg, and a bold tequila taste. A great liquer to serve with coffee or straight up.

ICON WINES?
A relatively new term, it refers to New World Wines of the highest quality. They can be either red or white. Generally, they are red blends. Wineries have free reign to produce a varietal or blend of choice; something that expresses or represents the style and character of the winery and wine maker. No international rules exist to define the category of Icon wine.
In Canada, Icon wines have become a successful marketing tool to draw attention to wines of British Columbia across Canada and also the world.
Mission Hill, known for it's Iconic wine Oculus, has expanded it's portfolio to include a white - Perpetua and a red - Quatrain. They recently released the first vintage of a 2005 red Quatrain. Different from the the Bordeaux style blend of Oculus, this second icon wine from Mission Hill represents more of the terroir. A quatrain is a poem or stanza that is always composed of four lines. This 2005 hallmark wine is similarly composed of four grape varieties: Merlot 57%, Syrah 28%, Cabernet Franc 10%, Cabernet Sauvignon 5%
John Simes, Mission Hill Family Estate's chief winemaker, has carefully crafted the inaugural vintage of this exquisite wine. The grapes were selected from the best blocks within the estates in Oliver and Osoyoos. They were hand harvested, hand sorted, and fermented in small lots in French oak fermenters, using both punch down and pump over. The wine was aged in a selection of 100% French oak barrels for 15 months. This wine offers a vivid core of ripe berry fruit shaded by dusty mocha and gamey licorice notes. The texture is pure South Okanagan; rich and supple with some chalky tannins. The flavours pick up momentum and fan out in the finish, revealing extra dimension and depth. A delicious, plummy red wine with a hint of chocolate.
Oculus, Quatrain and Perpetua are availalble in store.

GADGETS & GIZMOS
In our effort to be the leader in town bringing you the latest and greatest in imbibing paraphernalia, we have some new items to share with you this month.
The ever popular Titanium Crystal Wine and Spirits glasses continue to garner praise. Elegant and practical they are a great choice if you are considering replacing your current set of mis-matched glassware. Break resistant and dishwasher safe, these glasses will stand up to the most discerning guest or, the clutz at your table.
BREATHABLE GLASSES - Yes, glasses that breathe. Who knew?
The glass shapes of the "Eisch Superior Breathable" series have been designed according to the principle of optimally accentuating the character of the respective beverage. In addition, the glasses undergo an oxygenisation treatment which has the effect that bouquet and aromas open up within only a few minutes, which otherwise can only be achieved by decanting for 1 - 2 hours. "Superior Breathable" wine glasses and goblets are made in leadfree crystal-glass quality in fully-automatic operation using state-of-the art technology.
Being somewhat skeptical, Grant and I decided we would test them out at home. We chose a "Cheap and Cheerful" Portuguese red wine which we have decanted and sipped before, so we know how it should taste. As per the instructions that come with the glasses, we selected a similar size and shaped wine glass and made sure it was more than 18 inches from the Eisch glass on the counter. We uncorked the wine and poured some into the regular wine glass and some into the breathable one. We waited the suggested 2 minutes and then swirled and tasted the first sample from the regular glass. Then, the second sample from the breathable glass.........we were both astonished at the difference! It really did taste more "open" and less tannic as is often the case before decanting. These glasses are not dishwasher safe nor break resistant, so require more care than the titanim ones, but we would definitely recommend them.
For next month, we will be testing another product we brought in that claims to "decant your wine in 30 minutes instead of 1 -2 hours" - "The Wine Cellar Express"- a magnetic coaster you place the bottle on before pouring the wine in your glass.....
Until next time...keep sipping! | |
