VOICE of St Luke's ~
A Church for me.

After watching both of the political conventions over the past few weeks I have been thinking about leadership. What is it? How does it work? Why does there seem to be so little of it? Obviously this is an important concept for us as a church, especially as we face a change of clergy. A lot of work will be done by the church, especially by the search committee, to seek out the very best leader they can.
But leadership does not exist in a vacuum. Healthy leadership both creates and is created by a healthy system. Part of the problem we face as a nation is that our divided and dysfunctional political process actually prevents the emergence of great leadership. It is therefore really important that we avoid the temptation here at St. Luke's of just waiting for a rector who will "do it all for us."
One of the great strengths of St. Luke's is a talented array of lay leaders in many areas. And during the interim period we need our members to step forward in many areas. Debbie Cardone is great, but she needs more teachers to make the Church School strong. Miguel is great, but he needs adults to help on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings. We need a few more helpers at the Fourth Street Cafe. We will need good candidates at the annual meeting for vestry, warden and convention delegate. And we will need good people to serve on the search committee.
One of the best ways to ensure that you have good leadership for the future of the church is to actually become good leaders in our church right now. This is the time for the members of the church to pull together and make sure that our wonderful ministries not only survive but thrive. This is the time to get involved.

CHURCH SCHOOL NEWS | |
We offer a quick, light breakfast for our kids from 8:50 - 9:10 am on Sunday mornings, then move to the classrooms. This rotation we are learning to communicate with God through prayer.
Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
What is Prayer? Prayer is talking to GOD. And we can talk with God anytime and anywhere! We talk to God to build and strengthen our relationship with him, to get to know God better, to learn what God expects of us, what we can expect from him, and to find out how we can best accomplish the things that God wants us to do.
We also talk to God in order to seek advice and help, to show God that we recognize his existence and awesome power, and of course to show God that we have trust and confidence in him.
No matter where we are or what we are doing, we can always talk to God. While driving down the street, shopping in a store, or at a basketball game....no matter where we are, we can talk to God.
God's Peace through Prayer,
Deb Cardone |

Journeys Leads to New Beginnings | |
Journeys, a fun filled spiritual retreat for youth in grades 6-8, is the first event on the 2012-13 diocesan youth ministry calendar. Journeys weekend takes place October 5-7 at St Mark's, Orchard Park, NY.
Developed locally in our own diocese, the program works from the understanding that we are all on a spiritual journey. In those journeys there are choices, bumps, smooth passages, dead ends and unexpected surprises.
The Journeys weekend is led by a team of high school aged youth along with adults. It centers on six unique activity sessions and ends with worship with the congregation of
St. Mark's on Sunday morning.
Journeys is a great way for middle school aged youth to explore their faith beyond their home congregation and return home a little further along in their journey of faith.
The cost is $30 per person. Consider sponsoring a child through a scholarship donation. Applications are available for Journeys #3 by contacting the church office, or on line at http://www.eyouthwny.org/Downloads.html |

Thank You! | |
Dear friends,
I can't find enough words (or express them succinctly enough) to thank you all for the warm Farewell and generous gift-giving on my last Sunday with you. In a few days I will put on the green stole and chasuble, and think fondly of wearing it in your midst. The "purse" was wonderful and has been a real blessing with all the expenses of starting up in a new place, with daughters who want a few new things, too... I catch myself saying "Back home" a lot, and it will be some time before St. Luke's fades from that spot in our hearts. Thank you all for making us part of your lives, and sending us graciously along the path we share as Christ's own.
With love,
Susan, Margaret and Emily |
