St Luke's VOICE:   A Church for me
Christian Education Edition

WELCOME BACK !

WELCOME BACK to CHURCH SCHOOL!

Welcome to another exciting year of Sunday School!

PRAYER --

This year we will discover and begin to understand what prayer is and how and when to pray. We will explore the prayer life of Jesus and explore ways to incorporate prayer into our everyday lives. Also, we will learn new prayers shared by all during the church school year. Throughout the school year we will be constructing a book of prayer made by the children, families, and congregation.

Sunday school rotation classes will continue as they have in the past. A few changes will occur such as meeting in the undercroft at 8:50 a.m. to 9:10 a.m. for a light breakfast and maybe a couple more all-inclusive classes in the undercroft.

We all look forward to a wonderful school year filled with spiritual growth.

                                              GOD's Peace, Deb Cardone

WHAT IS PRAYER?  Sunday Sept 9th, All meet in the Undercroft.

We'll begin our day at 8:50 am with a light breakfast and talk about prayer.  Bring your favorite prayer with you!  That goes for Mom's and Dad's too.

Welcome Baaaack,  to Youth Ministry

We invite you to be a part of these programs by letting you know what we need in the How you can help sections.

S.L.Y. Jr.- (For grades 3-6)

S.L.Y. Jr. will meet on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month. We will meet right after the 10am Worship Service. Lunch will be provided. We begin the regular program schedule on October 2nd, but we are going to have an all youth groups BBQ in September. Stay tuned for detailed information.

How you can help:

  • We need people to provide lunches on the 1st & 3rd Sundays
  • Volunteer to be a part of the program 1 or 2 Sundays a month. Just hanging out and being present is a great way to get to know our kids and have them know you.
  • Drivers for our various outings
  • Prayer partners - always!

Rite 13- (For grades 7-8)

Our Sunday morning class for older middle school students. We have a great year planned for this class as we begin preparing them to move from childhood into adolescents and beyond. This year Miguel Covarrubias is teaching this class. This class meets every Sunday morning at 9am beginning September 9th!

How you can help:

  • We need 1 or 2 people who are willing to be a substitute teacher for when we cannot be here.
  • We need people who are willing to provide donuts
  • Prayer partners - always!

J2A-(For grades 9-11)

This is our Sunday morning class for younger high school students. This class prepares students for just what the name says the "Journey to Adulthood". We returned from a great pilgrimage last summer, and we will begin preparing the next class for their pilgrimage in 2014.  We are looking for a leader who would be willing to teach the J2A class.  J2A meets every Sunday morning at 9am beginning September 9th!

How you can help:

  • A volunteer to teach our J2A class
  • Someone(s) who would provide donuts for the class
  • Prayer Partners - always!

S.L.Y.: The Children of the rEVOLution and rEVOLutionaries:

 (for grades 7-12)

We are creating a community for teens in grades 7-12 to come and just be themselves. This is a place for them to belong and know that they are loved and accepted. We meet every Wednesday night from 6:30pm to 8:30pm; we'll be starting up again on Wednesday evening, September 12th.

How you can help:

  • Volunteer to help out 1,2,3 or even 4 Wednesdays a month. Adult presence is vital to the nurture of our group.
  • We are in real need for a female leader
  • We need snacks provided.
  • Substitute volunteers for when we cannot make it on a Wednesday night. This is where volunteering to be present helps because we already know each other!
  • Prayer Partners - ALWAYS ! - we are teenagers !

Adult Formation - Fall 2012

Where in the world does the time go? I cannot believe that summer is drawing to a close and it's time to get "back in the saddle" for the program year at St. Luke's. As always, we are working to offer you different and enriching opportunities for faith formation and growth.   With that in mind, a small group has started to meet with the purpose of assessing what we are offering currently and then determine what our format might look like throughout this year and the next. This group will also take into account the results of our latest NCD (Natural Church Development) survey. We know that we will continue retreats and those are being planned. We know that we want to continue the Sunday morning Adult Forum and planning for that is underway. More planning and discussion sessions are to take place and then a report to the parish will be made later in September or in October.

As mentioned above, the Adult Forum Planning Committee has met a couple of times and we have put together some interesting sessions for the month of September and October. We will "kickoff" the year on September 16 with a presentation by Catherine Way and Jay Phillippi on this year's General Convention in Indianapolis. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about our Church and to ask questions.

The following week, September 23, we will hear from our youth who took a mission trip this past summer. A number of our youth with others from the diocese travelled to Denver and they along with their leaders will tell us about that experience. We will also hear from Jared Yaggie about his journey to Europe for "People-to-People".

Starting on September 30, the Forum will begin a series on "The Political Landscape." In this series, which will carry on through October, we will engage some of our elected officials, both currently serving and having served, to talk about the landscape nationally, on the state level, and locally. We will also have a session on healthcare and that does seem to be a rather major topic of discussion this fall!

The Men's Wednesday Morning Bible Study continues to meet as does the Thursday Morning Women's Bible Study. Once the Adult Formation Plan is in place - there will be other offerings.

As we move into this new program year, more intense planning for Adult Formation will be taking place. As I have learned that Chautauqua Institution offers life-long learning, we at St. Luke's offer life-long growth and nurturing. Our faith journey IS life-long - we are never fully formed. My hope and prayer is that we are able as a parish to walk together, and help each other, on that journey.

                               Faithfully,

                               Barbara Bumsted,

                      Director of Adult Formation
