On Being a Christian

"Christians are made not born," the saying goes. But how are they made? This is the question we'll be discussing at a very important parish conversation on Thursday, June 14 from 6:00-9:00 pm. We will especially be focusing on the Christian formation of young people from their baptism through graduation from High School. When a member of our church graduates from High School and heads out into the world, what kind of Christian adult are they, or are they becoming? What do we hope and expect that they will know about the Bible, the Church, their spiritual gifts, etc.? What habits of Christian life -- prayer, stewardship, service -- do we hope and expect they will have? What kind of relationship do we hope and expect they will have with God --Father, Son and Holy Spirit? How able will they be to articulate and share their faith with others?

Christian formation is truly vital to our mission of nurturing people into a transforming relationship with Christ and His Church. Yet, as important as it is, there are many challenges. For many families, the spirit is willing, but the schedule is crazy. We feel the end of the school year is a very good time to take stock of our formation programs and to continue our planning for the 2012-13 school year. We are particularly interested in hearing from parents, teachers and parishioners about Sunday School. How can we continue to improve the ways we meet the needs of children and families? How can we creatively work to help make Christ the center of the lives of our children and families?

We really appreciate your input to this conversation.

A light supper will be provided.

Please RSVP to 483-6405 or stluke@netsync.net.

Save Our Shoreline

On June 30 and August 4, different areas around Chautauqua Lake will be cleaned up as part of

 "Adopt a Shoreline" days.

St. Luke's is invited to help at Lakewood Park, from 8:30 - 11:30 a.m.

A sign-up sheet is in the undercroft.  About 20 people are needed each date, bringing a pitchfork or sturdy rake, as we grab the loose seaweed and trash that has drifted in to shore, and pile it up for pick up by the Chautauqua Lake Association.

This project is being sponsored by the CLA and the Jamestown Rotary Club.

Talk to Mother Susan for details, and please sign up to make a difference for our beautiful but overly-weedy lake.

Free popsicles and water will be provided for all our volunteers!

Open Budget Meeting - June 11th

The Vestry of St. Luke's warmly (and strongly) encourages all members of the church to a special open meeting dedicated to a discussion of the church budget on Monday, June 11 at 7 pm in the Undercroft. The members of the vestry realize that when the budget is presented each year at the annual meeting, there really isn't time to fully explore all the issues and questions which may arise.

Fr. Eric will begin the meeting with a short presentation on the budget with help from treasurer Catherine Way. They will outline the process for creating the 2013 budget in the Fall and the opportunities and challenges we are anticipating as we try to accomplish all that God has called us to do. The vestry is really seeking input from the congregation as they prepare to make some big decisions.

We look forward to seeing you on June 11.

A Taste of Wine and Murder

The year is 1997. The place: Napa Valley, California - home of some of the best vineyards in America. Underwood Wine Estates is no different...though it has its secrets. Five years ago, vineyard owner Barry Underwood mysteriously disappeared.

Today, during the annual Napa Valley wine festival, his body was discovered.

Please join with us on Saturday, June 23rd at 6:30 pmin the undercroft for "A Taste of Wine and Murder" as wepiece out what happened to Mr. Underwood - and who is behind the crime. We'll do all the hard work - but we need you to pay witness, and watch the dramatics.

A dish to pass - finger foods or desserts, preferably - would be welcomed, and of course...some wine to enjoy, or your alternate beverage of choice.
