Lenten Worship Surveys
During the five Sundays in Lent, we featured worship in very different styles and invited you to tell us how you experienced God. The full survey results are on our website: www.stlukesjamestown.org. But here are some highlights. By the numbers all of the weeks scored at least 4 points out of a possible 5. Week four (joyful praise) was the most popular Sunday with a 4.5, followed closely by weeks two (transcendence) and three (contemplative) at 4.4. Next was week one (family) at 4.3 and last was week five (expansive imagery) with a 4.0.
Overall, I was struck by the number of people who commented that communion itself, no matter what style or form it takes, is what brings them closest to God. Other generally positive comments included the participation of children and youth in music and liturgy and the extra silence in week four, though a few people mentioned the difficulty of pulling it off in a large group. Some critical comments mentioned confusion as we dealt with some unfamiliar weekly changes in words, music and movement. Other people liked the different elements, but wouldn't necessarily want them every week.
Also some of the same elements that some found the most helpful and meaningful, others found the least helpful and meaningful. For instance, the more upbeat contemporary music in the last two Sundays was mentioned as both a strong positive, but also by a couple people as a negative. In week two the Great Litany and high church Rite I elements had a few strong enthusiasts, while more found it off-putting to have the priests facing away from the congregation. And though many loved the Taize-style prayers of the people, one person thought the organ accompaniment evoked "doom and gloom." There were positive comments about the expanded imagery and new prayers and hymns in week 5, but some found it disjointed and many found the Message version of the psalm too jarringly different.
My favorite comment of all was made just recently. "I enjoyed the survey," they said, "and appreciated being asked my opinion. It also made me pay closer attention to what goes on in worship."
I am grateful to Mother Susan for putting this project together and for everyone who attended worship and filled out surveys. While we have no plans to make major changes in worship at St. Luke's at this time, we will certainly take all of the comments into consideration as we continue to plan worship at St. Luke's that is "a joyful expression of our Anglican tradition."

Pentecost, the Beginning of the Church
Our final story of the Church School's year of "Great Beginnings" is the story of Pentecost found in Acts ch. 2: "When the day of Pentecost came, Jesus' friends were all together in one place. Suddenly a noise like a strong, blowing wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting..."
We'll re-enact this amazing event, and prepare for church on May 27 - the feast of Pentecost - by learning phrases in multiple languages to illustrate the reading. Teens and grown-ups: If you speak another language, can you help us learn how to say "Jesus is Lord" and "God is doing great things!" in as many ways as we can?
I'll especially need some help on the 27th.
Thanks! - Mother Susan |

Mothers' Day - May 13th | |
Mothers' Day Brunch
It gives the Men of St. Luke's great pleasure to invite all the mothers (and daughters of mothers) and their families to St. Luke's for our traditional Mothers' Day Brunch on May 13. The brunch follows the 10:00 service and features a medley of breakfast casseroles, fresh fruit, sweet rolls, orange juice, Mimosas and coffee. There is no need to make a reservation and there is no cost, so come let us honor the women in our midst.
Gentlemen of St. Luke's:
We, the Men of St. Luke's, take great delight in hosting the annual Mothers' Day Brunch on May 13th. There are plenty of opportunities to pitch in and help should you choose to join in the fun. Please sign up on the sheet in the undercroft, or see Chip Ulrich (or call 763-7625). |

Paul Bunyan Event - recap
St. Luke's Paul Bunyan Day was a huge success this year with 23¼ men attending. A considerable amount of wood was cut, split, and stacked. We were especially pleased to have several young men participating. Chris & Jim Butler, and Gavin Card all proved to be good workers. We enjoyed having special guests as Doug Mann's father (also Doug) from Randolph, and Marty Wilder from St. Peter's in Westfield, Owen Carr's friend, attended. Fenton Gustafson's black lab named "Sig" also brought much pleasure, as did Justyn, Owen's foster child. Special thanks to Fr. Eric and Richard Anderson who provided the food for a hungry group of men. What a "mountain top" day!

St. Luke's New Photo Directory --
Coming Soon! | | |
Coming soon to a church near you: a new St. Luke's Photo Directory! Having been several years since our last one, and since we have so many new faces in our midst, we've decided it's time to have a new "facebook". This time, instead of having a photo company such as Olan Mills do it, we will create our own, using specialty software. More details will be forthcoming, but be aware that we will need folks to help with photography, organizing photo sessions, collecting and updating information and many other tasks. If you are interested in helping, please speak to Cilla Menzies or Donna Phillippi.
