 Celtic Spirituality Retreat

Saturday, April 28  9:30 am--2:00 pm

Is Celtic Spirituality connected to the Druids or Merlin? Alternatively, is it some kind of New Age concoction? Neither, of course. It stems from very early Christianity in the Western Isles (the lands of the Celts). Celtic spirituality emphasizes the presence of God at the heart of all creation including all of life's aspects. Although obscured by sin we are all made in the image of God. All the Cosmos was created by God and is therefore, good.

Two key verses in the Bible sum up those statements. Genesis 1:27 and 1:31:

So God created humankind in His own image; He created them in the image of God; Male and female He created them both.

God saw all that He made and it was very good...

Some topics we might explore include:

  • the meaning of being created in God's image
  • the goodness of creation and care of the earth
  • healing
  • justice and peace
  • commitment to Christ
  • communion of heaven and earth
  • welcome and hospitality

During this retreat, we will have time for worship, prayer, reflection, discussion and fellowship. Of course, there has to be some lecturing about the subject matter! Come and have a joyous time as we explore this topic.

The retreat will be led by Janice Marie McDonald, PhD.   She was raised in Jamestown and has attended St. Luke's (when in town) since the age of 17.  A confirmed Episcopalian, she was a university professor from 1987-2001.  She is also an exhibited artist (most art has to do with nature), and a published poet (much of poetry has to do with nature, social justice, and spirituality).   Her religious training includes pre-theology studies at Wittenberg University; EFM; studies for spiritual direction; training in Franciscan Spirituality from the Society of St. Francis; Celtic retreats in Delaware.

To register, call the office at 483-6405 or send an email to stluke@netsync.net.  The cost is $10 which includes a light lunch.

Our next parish fellowship event will be an outing to see the musical "Godspell".  We'll meet at church at 6:00 pm for pizza and salad then head over to the Spire of Jamestown (317 E. 4th Street) for a benefit production of this inspiring theatrical event.  Presale tickets are $12 and are available at the Labyrinth Press Co., Babalu Cafe and Holy Family Catholic Academy or you can get tickets at the door for $15.  There will be a free-will offering for dinner at St. Luke's.  It would help us plan dinner if you let us know you're coming.  Call 483-6405 or email stluke@netsync.net.

paulbunyanPaul Bunyan Day - April 29th

Calling all men of St. Luke's Church to our annual

Paul Bunyan Day planned for Sunday, April 29th. Mark this date on your calendars; we always have a wonderful time. All are welcome. Bring saws, gloves, and a desire to 'lay up wood' for God's service. Firewood will be distributed to those in need of it. We meet for our morning Eucharist, then enjoy a leisurely lunch - if you choose not to actively participate in preparing the firewood, give us moral support and advice! You can still enjoy the lunch, the Eucharist, and the beautiful surroundings. We'll gather at 9 am at the home of Dan Anderson, 4463 Mahanna Rd, Bemus Point, NY.  We need help this year preparing lunch.  If you can help, please call Fr. Eric at 483-6405.
