The VOICE of St. Luke's
February 26, 2012 |
A Message from the Music Director
Martin Luther once said "After the word of God, music deserves the highest praise." I think most of us can concur with Luther's basic idea: that music is one of the greatest and most meaningful ways in which God speaks to us and inspires us. This being the case, I am pleased to announce two new initiatives at St. Luke's which I hope will further develop the marvelous examples of musical talent we possess right among our own members.
First is the performance of a short instrumental prelude piece by one of our young people at the 10 am service on every Sunday when the Youth Choir sings. So far we have heard Olivia Pinciaro on piano in November, Ashley Bennett on violin in December, and Gavin Card on saxophone in January. In each case the solo performed was a solo arrangement of a traditional hymn tune. All three students did a super job, and certainly deserve credit for the courage is takes to play a solo for the congregation. I hope as many people as possible will compliment and encourage our young instrumentalists whenever they play in church.
Second, I am delighted to tell you that we have begun planning for our next big choral concert. Building upon the great success of our Vivaldi concert last November, I have selected the glorious MAGNIFICAT by Johann Sebastian Bach to be our next big piece. The choir will begin learning this very challenging work as soon as the music arrives. This piece is about the same length as the Vivaldi GLORIA. Like the GLORIA, it includes large choral movements interspersed with solos. As with the Vivaldi concert, I plan to invite other interested singers in the greater Jamestown area to join with us for the choral movements, however the solos will be covered by our own people.
I am very excited about both of these endeavors, and I wish to thank the entire St. Luke's church family for supporting them.

Moses and a Burning Bush!
How does God get your attention?
With Moses, chasing his sheep on a mountainside, God lit a bush on fire and then spoke from it. Wow! We'll explore this key story from Exodus in variety of workshops; and think about what it might take for us to notice God in our busy, daily lives.

The Early Temptations of Christ
The Bible tells us that Jesus grew up as a regular kid in Nazareth, listening to his parents and growing in wisdom (Luke 2:51-52). No doubt he faced temptations as an adolescent, not just as an adult in our famous Lenten story. The Acting Apostles will be creating and presenting an original production, "The Early Temptations of Christ." Look for us in the "Re-Creation" room. See you there!

ADULT FORUM | |
On Sunday, February 26, the Forum begins its Lenten series on "Sacramental Christianity or Why God has dirt under His Fingernails." Fr. Eric will lead us in an exploration of what it means to experience God in "our peculiar form of liturgical, sacramental Christianity." (Fr. Eric.) Join us as we delve into the seven sacraments over the course of Lent.
On Sunday, March 4th, the Forum will continue with Part II of the above series as Fr. Eric helps us to take a deeper look into baptism and the Eucharist. |

WORSHIP during LENT -
Where Tradition meets Today!
Episcopal/Anglican worship has a rich diversity that we try to illustrate in small ways each Sunday. This Lent at St. Luke's, we're going to offer a five-week demonstration of the adage that "The more things change, the more they stay the same" ... within the spectrum of Anglican worship. Each Sunday at 10 a.m. we will worship using a different type of liturgy and music, all fitting under the umbrella of "Episcopal Holy Eucharist." The purpose is to demonstrate a range of rites and rituals, which adhere to the same pattern of Word - Prayer - Communion.
1st Sunday in Lent, February 26: "The Family Gathered at the Table." Jesus drew criticism from Scribes and Pharisees for eating with all sorts of people. He still invites us close.
2nd Sunday in Lent, March 4: "The Transcendence of God." Rite One texts and Anglo-Catholic ritual highlights the holiness of God who dwells on high. |

Women's Bible Study | |
Women's Bible Study meets at 8:30 each Thursday morning on the stage area in the undercroft. Typically, a chapter or more is read, followed by discussion and historical content of the times and what it all possibly means. Reading through and discussing the Apocrypha is soon coming to an end (that's the Apocrypha, not the Apocalypse!). The New Testament is in sight! Have you considered including Bible Study to your Lenten routine? Maybe now is the time! |
