The VOICE of St. Luke's
February 19, 2012 |
The more things change...
Episcopal / Anglican worship has a rich diversity that we try to illustrate in small ways each Sunday. Usually music is the easiest place to see this in action: our hymns, anthems and songs come from a range of centuries and genres. If you've had a chance to worship in an "Anglo-Catholic" or "Prayer-and-Praise" setting, more possibilities come to light.
This Lent at St. Luke's, we're going to offer a five-week demonstration of the adage that "The more things change, the more they stay the same" within the spectrum of Anglican worship styles. Each Sunday at 10:00 a.m. we will worship using a different type of liturgy and music, all fitting under the umbrella of "Episcopal Holy Eucharist." The purpose is to demonstrate a range of rites and rituals, which nevertheless adhere to the same pattern of Word - Prayer - Communion.
An explanatory paragraph and a survey will accompany each of these services. Your clergy and musicians want to know how you experience God in worship. What elements might we want to bring back? What traditions resonate here? Even if your usual worship time is not 10 a.m., I encourage you to attend at least a couple of these services to see what it's about! Several unchanging elements will keep us connected from one week to the next, and (hopefully) keep things from being overwhelming.
1st Sunday in Lent, February 26: "The Family Gathered at the Table." Jesus drew criticism from Scribes and Pharisees for eating with all sorts of people. He still invites us close.
2nd Sunday in Lent, March 4: "The Transcendence of God." Rite One texts and Anglo-Catholic ritual highlights the holiness of God who dwells on high.
3rd Sunday in Lent, March 11: "Contemplative Worship." Elements of monastic worship and silent contemplation will deepen Word and Prayer.
4th Sunday in Lent, March 18: "Joyful Praise." Gospel and contemporary praise songs will lift our spirits as we highlight the joy of knowing Jesus.
5th Sunday in Lent, March 25th: "Expanding our Images of God."Sometimes familiar words limit our understanding of God's activity. We'll explore new texts, spoken and sung.
As the chief architect of this series, I welcome your input and reflections. Further opportunities to discuss the effects of worship on our understanding of God will be offered at the 9 a.m. Forum on Sacraments. Join us and bring a friend - everyone's participation and opinions are valuable; and you just might be surprised at how God touches your heart in a new prayer, song or ceremony.

Calling All Men! | | |
If you're a man, you're a member! Over the years we have enjoyed a number of events for fun, fellowship, worship and service. One of the best things about this group is that we only have one meeting a year. And that meeting will be held Saturday, February 25 at the rectory (311 Crossman Street) at 7 pm. Bring a beverage or snack to share. We'll have some fellowship and plan out the activities for the year. If you have any questions, please call Dan Anderson at 386-7802. |

Moses and a Burning Bush!
How does God get your attention?
With Moses, chasing his sheep on a mountainside, God lit a bush on fire and then spoke from it. Wow! We'll explore this key story from Exodus in variety of workshops; and think about what it might take for us to notice God in our busy, daily lives.

The Acting Apostles begin a New Project
The Bible tells us that Jesus grew up as a regular kid in Nazareth, listening to his parents and growing in wisdom (Luke 2:51-52). No doubt he faced temptations as an adolescent, not just as an adult in our famous Lenten story. The Acting Apostles will be creating and presenting an original production, "The Early Temptations of Christ." All hands on deck, please! We'll start in the "Re-Creation" room to map out the script. See you there!

On Sunday, February 26, the Forum will begin its Lenten series on "The Sacraments: What are they and what do they mean to us?"
