Passing it On

At the Annual Meeting of the Parish on January 29, we will induct new members into the George F. O'Pray Legacy Society. This society recognizes all those who have named St. Luke's Church in their will or estate plans. It is named for Fr. George F. O'Pray, the rector under whom our endowment was established.

Planned giving is an important part of funding the important ministry of our church.  A planned gift allows for the donation of an asset at a specific future date in one's will or estate plan. Anyone who names St. Luke's Episcopal Church or the Diocese of Western New York as a beneficiary in his or her will or estate plan becomes a member of the Society.  If you already have a will, you need not rewrite it.  You can add a provision for the Church through a simple codicil.  For more information and assistance, contact your financial advisor and/or attorney.  We do ask that you fill out a statement of intent (which is available at church or from the office).

As a member of the George F. O'Pray Legacy Society, your name will be entered into the George F. O'Pray Legacy Society book, which is displayed in the rear of the church. New members will be recognized at the annual meeting and will receive a lapel pin signifying their membership. But the greatest reward comes from knowing that you recognize the needs of others, both now and in the future and have responded to those needs with the gift of yourself.

We have all been blessed by the wonderful heritage of faith and service at St. Luke's Church. It's important that we do our part to pass on what we have received. When we become part of the O'Pray Society we ensure that this parish will be strengthened and sustained for generations to come.

I invite you to join me and the other members of the society. Please call if you have any questions or are interested in receiving an information packet.

  Church School  resumes
January 8th, 2012

On January 8, Church School returns to our theme of "Great Beginnings" with the story of Jesus calling the first disciples - the fishermen Peter, Andrew, James and John.  They left their boats and followed Jesus to become "fishers of men."  Ahoy mates, cast the nets over the side, and let's see what - or whom - we  catch!

The Acting Apostles will begin their next adventure, too - a chancel drama for Lent.

Join us on Sundays at 9 a.m.

 Can you teach in January?

Lots of ideas and props for all workshops, including a net and lots of stuffed fish!  What interests you?

ADULT FORUM

The Adult Forum resumes Sunday, January 8th beginning a new series by our Bishop William Franklin on "Our Episcopal Identity". This series will give one an opportunity to learn more about how the Episcopal Church began and who we are.

We'll start off with a 10 minute DVD from our Bishop and then there will be discussion. The focus for this week is the roots of the Episcopal Church in America.

Join us at 9:00 am on the stage area of the Undercroft.

On Sunday, January 15, the Forum will continue the series "Our Episcopal Identity" with a focus on evangelism and the Episcopal Church - again with historical reference for our Church in America and where we are today.

Music News

I would like to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate the many volunteers who made our music this past Christmas season so inspiring and meaningful.  The choir, I felt, was in outstanding form both at the service of Lessons & Carols on December 18 and at the 11PM service on Christmas Eve.  Special recognition goes to our gifted soloists at the 11PM Christmas Eve service:  Luke Allport-Cohoon, Jim Beal, Cathy Covarrubias, David Small, and Ruth Walton.

Our youth have also been doing wonderful things musically in recent weeks.  Gavin Card and Emily Williams's duet at the service of Lessons and Carols was absolutely beautiful.  And of course, the pageant at the 4PM Christmas Eve service was a huge hit.

Finally, I would like to thank Jim Beal and Ted Kapuscinski for their participation in St. Luke's Acoustic Band on New Year's Day, when we did spirited "band-style" arrangements of traditional carols.

St. Luke's is blessed with a true abundance of musical talent among our members.   Thank you, one and all, and Happy New Year!   -Andy
