Advent Quiet Day:
Saturday, December 3 | |
We invite you to take a little time out this year to find the quiet space to welcome the coming of Christ in your life. Give yourself an early Christmas present. This quiet day will be held at St. Luke's from 9:30 am-3:00 pm. A delicious soup lunch will be provided. A registration flyer is available at the church. This retreat is the second in our year-long series of retreats designed with one simple goal-to help us discover or rediscover the presence of God in our lives. We all need a time when we can step away and be refreshed by the renewing power of the Holy Spirit.

Bring a Friend to Church
Recently, one of our newer vestry members said, "We have a wonderful church. Why aren't our pews full on Sundays?" We are in the midst of a very interesting Forum series on the "E" word and the vestry has spent time recently discussing church growth and the variety of ways we can and should be reaching out. Our efforts to date include better signage outside, televising the service, regular press releases about events, an up-to-date web page, and a presence on Facebook and Twitter.
Study after study shows, however, that the single most important factor in church growth is the willingness of members to personally invite their friends and relatives. Easy, right? And best of all, it's free! Well, as you know, it's not that easy. In this culture at this time, starting a conversation about church or religion can be very delicate indeed. Many friends and family are either already involved in their own churches or have religious scar tissue from a former bad experience. There is sometimes almost a taboo about broaching the subject.
Yet one of our core responsibilities as Christians is to proclaim the good news by word and example. We must be ready to "give an account for the hope that is in us." One good way is to invite people to church. So this December, as our thoughts turn to Christmas, I ask you to take a risk and invite a friend to church. Think through your network of relatives, friends and coworkers. Pray for each one of them and ask God to direct you the ones who might be the most receptive.
We will have cards available at church that you can use to help you with this. Our services during December will have a special welcoming focus. In January we will have our next "All Aboard Sunday," an opportunity to sign the book and become an official baptized member. We will also have our "Journey of Faith" class for those who wish to prepare for confirmation. |

CHURCH SCHOOL : Preparing a Jesse Tree !
The Church School begins its new project, The Advent Jesse Tree, this Sunday (Nov. 20). Each week through Dec. 18, the kids will hear two stories that describe or predict our need for a Savior. The Blue and Red Groups will combine to create ornaments that symbolize the stories. If you'd like to help in this crafty process, just let me know! Our ten stories will include "greatest hits" like Adam & Eve, Noah's Ark, King David, and more.
Meanwhile, the Acting Apostles have begun working on our Christmas Pageant, "Shepherds, Sheep and a Savior." What's the fun of taking care of shaggy, smelly sheep?? A group of grouchy shepherds is surprised by a vision of angels, and become the first to worship the newborn Savior. The Youth Choir, instrumentalists and assorted "lambs" will help make this a great production for our 4 p.m. Christmas Eve Service. See me to sign up your young star! - Mother Susan
November 20: In the Very Beginning
Adam & Eve - their "Fall" means we need Jesus
Noah's Ark - The first time humankind was saved
November 27: Pioneers of Faith
Abraham & Sarah - chosen by God to be our ancestors in faith
Moses - the Ten Commandments get us going the right way |

ADULT FORUM:
Always Open ... | |
On Sunday, November 20, the Forum will host Part III of this series discussing "Going out (or in) and Doing it". Evangelism is meant to be organic not mechanic. We will discuss - and reminisce! - about some programs we've done in the past, but we want to now draw on our experiences and what we have heard and learned over the past two weeks and move forward, not engaging another program, but being relaxed in our own skin about evangelism.
On Sunday, November 27, the Forum will wrap up our evangelism series. In this particular segment, we will take a look at what it means for the Episcopal Church in general, and St. Luke's in particular to be "Always Open..."
Be sure to join us each Sunday morning at 9:00 on the stage area of the undercroft.
