 Advent Quiet Day:

Saturday, December 3

Advent can be the lost season in our busy Christmas rush. It's easy to spend so much time on the activities of the season that we forget what it's really all about. We invite you to take a little time out this year to find the quiet space to welcome the coming of Christ in your life. Give yourself an early Christmas present. The quiet day will be held at St. Luke's from 9:30 am-3:00 pm. A delicious soup lunch will be provided. A flyer with a registration form is enclosed in this issue of the VOICE.

Our retreat leader will be the Rev. Brother Blane Frederik van Pletzen-Rand. A native of Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, Brother Blane has lived in South Africa, England, and Hawaii (where he taught English and World Religions at Brigham Young University in Laíe.) He has recently served as canon at St. Paul's Cathedral in Buffalo.

This retreat is the second in our year-long series of retreats.   We hope that every member of the church will be able and willing to come to at least one. They are all designed with one simple goal-to help us discover or rediscover the presence of God in our lives. We all need a boost from time to time in our faith, times when we can step away and be refreshed by the renewing power of the Holy Spirit.

And don't forget our other ongoing spiritual opportunity-the Monastery of the Heart discernment group. We are meeting Tuesday nights at 7 pm and our next gathering will be on November 29. Questions? Call the office at 483-6405 or email stluke@netsync.net.

Church School: Preparing a Jesse Tree!

The Church School begins its new project, The Advent Jesse Tree, this Sunday (Nov. 20). Each week through Dec. 18, the kids will hear two stories that describe or predict our need for a Savior. The Blue and Red Groups will combine to create ornaments that symbolize the stories. If you'd like to help in this crafty process, just let me know! Our ten stories will include "greatest hits" like Adam & Eve, Noah's Ark, King David, and more.

Meanwhile, the Acting Apostles have begun working on our Christmas Pageant, "Shepherds, Sheep and a Savior." What's the fun of taking care of shaggy, smelly sheep?? A group of grouchy shepherds is surprised by a vision of angels, and become the first to worship the newborn Savior. The Youth Choir, instrumentalists and assorted "lambs" will help make this a great production for our 4 p.m. Christmas Eve Service. See me to sign up your young star!

Advent Creativity is for Adults, too!

Something about Advent just brings out my creativity. Cookies, ornaments, manger scenes - the "visuals" of Christmas are among the most inspiring of the year (especially if you can manage to block out the tacky alternatives!). I'm predicting, hopefully, that others enjoy this creative burst and will join me each Sunday in Advent at the Spiritual Creativity Table. Projects will be geared for teens and adults (but I'll have a children's table, too). A donation of $1 will help keep the artist's cupboard stocked with everything we need!

                                           Creatively yours,

                               Mother Susan

ADULT FORUM

"The 'E-Word': Fear it? Love it? What is it?"

Over the past two weeks, the Adult Forum has learned and talked about what evangelism is and how we might "do it".

On Sunday, November 20, the Forum will host Part III of this series discussing "Going out (or in) and Doing it". Evangelism is meant to be organic not mechanic. We will discuss - and reminisce! - about some programs we've done in the past, but we want to now draw on our experiences and what we have heard and learned over the past two weeks and move forward, not engaging another program, but being relaxed in our own skin about evangelism.

Be sure to join us at 9:00 am on the stage area of the undercroft.
