Vivaldi's Gloria

November 18 at 8 pm

On Friday, November 18 at 8:00 pm you are invited to a marvelous concert at St. Luke's. The highlight of the concert will be a performance of Vivald's famous Gloria. The choir has worked really hard to prepare for this performance and is really excited to share it with the parish and community. Our director of music, Andy Schmidt will be conducting. Former director of music Ronald McEntire will be accompanying on the organ and will be joined by Mitchell Alpaugh on harpsichord and Margaret Williams on violin. Soloists will be Cathy Covarrubias, Elisabeth Rankin, Ruth Walton, and Catherine Way.

Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (4 March 1678 - 28 July 1741), nicknamed il Prete Rosso ("The Red Priest") because of his red hair, was an Italian Baroque composer, priest, and virtuoso violinist, born in Venice. Vivaldi is recognized as one of the greatest Baroque composers, and his influence during his lifetime was widespread over Europe. Vivaldi is known mainly for composing instrumental concertos, especially for the violin, most famously The Four Seasons, as well as sacred choral works and over 40 operas. Many of his compositions, including the Gloria, were written for the female music ensemble of the Ospedale della Pietŕ, a home for abandoned children where Vivaldi worked from 1703 to 1715 and from 1723 to 1740.

The concert will also feature Canticle I (for organ) by Daniel Gawthrop, played by Andy Schmidt, and Canticle II "Abraham & Isaac" by Benjamin Britten with James Beal, tenor and Michelle Buhite, soprano.

Admission is free. An offering will be taken to benefit music ministries at St. Luke's and a reception will follow the concert. Invite your friends to this wonderful evening of music and support our wonderful musicians.

 Church School New Rotation

begins Nov 20

Our Advent Workshops begin a week early, as we want to make the most of a new project: The Jesse Tree.  Beginning in the middle ages, church theologians and artists were inspired by the prophecy in Isaiah ch. 11, that "A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord..."  Jesse was the father of King David. Artists used the genealogies (lists of ancestors) of Jesus listed in Matthew and Luke to portray wonderful family trees, springing from a sleeping Jesse. We'll look at some photos of these works, in stained glass, sculpture, miniature paintings and more.  Our more modest efforts will be to create "Advent Tree" Ornaments, depicting the "ancestry" of Jesus - not just his family, but the great stories that illustrate why he was born.

I'm looking for teachers to choose a couple of dates to help the kids make ornaments!  Each week we'll use a different medium (clay, paper, wood...) to illustrate two stories.  This will be a neat way for adults to get in the Advent spirit, too.  Please let me know if you'd like to get creative with us!

ADULT FORUM

"The 'E-Word': Fear it? Love it? What is it?"

Most people picture someone on the street corner waving a floppy bible or having to knock on the doors of strangers when they hear the word "evangelism". On Sunday, November 6, the Adult Forum will begin a four-part series entitled

"The 'E-Word': Fear it? Love it? What is it?"

Fr. Eric will lead the first session talking with us about some of the terminology of evangelism; what is evangelism; and what, as Episcopalians, can we do to understand and break down the barriers. Be sure to join us at 9:00 am on the stage area of the undercroft.

Ecumenical Choir Festival a Big Success!

I would like to congratulate all the members of St Luke's adult and youth choirs who sang so beautifully at the Ecumenical Choir Festival last Sunday afternoon (October 30).  Our anthem went extremely well, and I heard many glowing comments about it from various people who were there.  I also must say that, selfishly speaking, I felt very proud to be associated with such a wonderful group.

                                        Thank you!   -Andy

Alzheimer's National Commemorative

 Candle Lighting

Sunday, November 13 at 4:00 pm

in the Chapel

Light a candle of care and shed light on the rising incidence of Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias during Alzheimer's Disease Awareness month.  We will be holding a brief service in the chapel for all those who wish to remember all those who have died or are suffering with this and other related diseases and for their families.  Call Fr. Eric for more information.

Thanksgiving Week

On Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 24, we will celebrate Holy Communion in the chapel at 10 am. This year there will be no ecumenical service with Immanuel and First Lutheran Churches. For years now interest and attendance have been declining, and with the departure of the pastor at Immanuel this month we have decided to take the year off. There will also be no Thanksgiving Feast in the undercroft this year. Some of our downtown neighbors will especially miss that meal and fellowship so we will be offering a special take-out Thanksgiving meal at the Fourth Street Café on November 17. If you would also like to invite one or more of them to your family celebration, talk to Fr. Eric or Ron Stahley.
