Telling Stories | | |
This year's diocesan convention was redesigned by Bishop Franklin to be more about story telling than business as usual. Congregations were asked to choose two stories that said something profound about their life-one a story of crisis and another of hope. At our deanery meetings we heard the stories of each local congregation and then chose two to pass on to the convention. It was really quite inspiring to listen to these stories, which included floods and other natural disasters as well as the amazing grace of God arriving in unexpected ways.
The bishop's goal is twofold, I think. First, he continues to learn about the congregations of this diocese, their leaders and their histories. Second, he believes that we will become much stronger by coming together in deeper and more profound ways. And all of this begins by coming to know each other on a deeper level, our hopes, our fears, our failures and our successes.
It has often been noted that Jesus taught most often not by reciting lists of rules, but by telling stories. Stories have power because they touch both our minds and our hearts. When we hear someone's story, we cannot help but connect with them in profound ways. We may forget information or data, but stories stick with us and continue to work on our imaginations and shape our vision and our behavior.
I love stories and often have my head in a book (or now Kindle) when I have some free time. This month as part of my CREDO plan, I will be switching off the TV and turning my hand to creative writing, joining with thousands of people around the country in NaNoWriMo, National Novel Writing Month.
What are the stories that have shaped you? What stories do you like to tell? Most importantly, how does the old, old story of Jesus and his love continue to shape and inform your life?

Mary meets an Angel
This "new beginning" is Jesus' miraculous conception, of course. The story is from Luke 1:26-38 (NRSV), the angel Gabriel visits Mary.

You are invited to explore a fascinating movement called Monasteries of the Heart. It's about learning to live a meaningful life and is based on a thousand years of Benedictine tradition. Curious? We'll learn more together on Tuesday nights, Nov. 1st, 15th and 29th.
We'll meet for about one hour and read together through Sister Joan Chittister's book of the same title. Copies of the book will be available Nov 1st.
