Shoppers' Luncheon - A Jamestown Tradition

One of the great traditions in downtown Jamestown is the annual Shoppers' Luncheon hosted by St. Luke's on the second Friday of November.  The event includes the sale of baked goods, brooms and RADA cutlery, but what brings people back year after year is the delicious homemade Chicken a la King dinner prepared by the Bishop Overs Guild.  In a time when more people than ever are eating fast food, this meal sends us back in time to the age of slow-cooked food made entirely from scratch.  Guild members cook the chicken, make the gravy (the most important job in my opinion), and bake the pies.  The grape pies are a particular favorite and require extra work as each grape must be pitted by hand.  Apple, pumpkin, grape and strawberry-rhubarb pies are also offered this year.

How can you help?  The members of the Bishop Overs Guild are incredibly hard workers, but they can't do this job alone.  They need help with the set-up and clean-up.  And, most importantly, they need people to bake for the bake sale.  Plan ahead and consider sharing your particular specialty.  If you don't know how to bake, learn how...there's time!  We also need parishioners to help sell tickets.  Take-outs are available for those on a tight schedule, but we need paid reservations by the day before. Tickets are $7.00 for adults; $3.00 for children under 12.

Long-time luncheon chairperson, Liz McIntyre, is recovering from 2 hip replacements. The luncheon chairmen this year are Wilma & Jack Twinam, and they are assisted by Jane Campbell (dining room), Sheila Eaglesome (Publicity), Dorothy Anderson (tickets), Kay Stahlman and Ann Lamp (pie kitchen), Marie Jim (bake sale) St. Luke's Women (chicken preparation) and Bob Lamp (RADA cutlery and brooms). Chip Ulrich heads the men's group which coordinates set-up and clean-up.

Let's all do our part to keep this great tradition alive and flourishing for the good of our parish and the wider community.

Mary meets an Angel

This "new beginning" is Jesus' miraculous conception, of course.  The story is from Luke 1:26-38 (NRSV), the angel Gabriel visits Mary.

ADULT FORUM

This Sunday, Oct 23rd, Adult Forum will offer an "Open Forum". When the Forum first started back in 1999, we offered these Open Forums as a way to get caught up with current issues facing St. Luke's, the Diocese, the whole Church - or even important topics facing us in general.

Be sure to join us at 9:00 on the stage area in the undercroft.

There will be no Adult Forum on Sunday, October 30 as that is Joyful Sunday!! On that day there will be only ONE worship service which will be at 9:00 am.

The Adult Baking Forum will resume on Sunday, November 6 beginning a series on - the "E" Word!  What is it and why do we want to know more about it? Come and find out on Nov 6!

All Saints' Day - Tues, Nov 1st

We will celebrate the Feast of All Saints at the weekend services on November 5-6.  Warning-there will be incense at the 10 am service, so if you are allergic, you might want to come to a different service that weekend.

The "Acting Apostles" will be making their debut at that service as well.

We will also have a special service on All Saints' Day itself, November 1, at 12:05 pm in the chapel.  This is the service at which we read the names of those who have died during the past year.

If you would like to include the name of a loved one, please call or email Kim at 483-6405 or stluke@netsync.net.

cross monasteryExploring the Monastery of the Heart

You are invited to come and explore a fascinating movement called Monasteries of the Heart. We learned about this movement during a recent retreat at Mt. St. Benedict Monastery in Erie. It's all about learning to live a meaningful life and is based on a thousand years of Benedictine tradition. Curious? We'll be learning more together on Tuesday nights starting Nov. 1st.

We'll meet for about one hour on the first, third and fifth Tuesdays and read together through Sister Joan Chittister's book of the same title.   You can buy the book yourself, or we will have copies of the first few chapters available. Call Fr. Eric at 483-6405 if you have any questions.

ACTING APOSTLES to perform Nov 6th

St. Luke's Acting Apostles (St. Luke's kids in grades 5 & 6) will present their first short play at the 10:00 a.m. service on Sunday, Nov. 6.  This will take the place of the sermon on All Saints Sunday.
