Hello Everyone!
I would like to take some time to highlight some of the new and exciting things that are happening with St. Luke's Youth, and how YOU can help our YOUth. First, THANK YOU for all the support you have given already to get us to where we are now. We definitely would not be here without you, but we aren't finished with you yet! We need your continued help to cultivate and help our programs flourish!
S.L.Y. Jr. is for grades 3-6. We have redone our Sunday night youth programming and made it better - we think! S.L.Y. Jr. will meet on the first and third Sundays of each month after the 10 o'clock worship service. Lunch will be provided. There will be separate programs for grades 3-4 and 5-6. Our regular program schedule begins on October 2nd.
How can YOU help?
- We need people to provide lunches on the 1st and 3rd Sundays each month. If you can just pick up extra lunch meat, cheese and a bag of chips on your next shopping trip you can help us out!
- VOLUNTEER to be a part of the program 1 or 2 Sundays a month. This only requires your presence, no lesson planning or game playing, if you don't want to. We just want our kids to know that the Congregation cares about them too!
- For 3-4 grade talk to Mother Susan
- For 5-6 grade talk to Miguel
- Drivers for our various outings. If you can drive, you can help! If you are able to cart us around please let us know!
- Prayer partners to pray for our various kids. We will begin a prayer partner program in October.
S.L.Y.: The Children of the rEVOLution - and rEVOLutionaries
is for grades 7-12.
We are creating a community for teens grades 7-12 to come and just be themselves. This is a place for them to belong and know that they are loved and accepted. We meet Wednesday evenings from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.
How YOU can help:
- Volunteer to be present. The 1st &r 3rd Wednesdays each month need an adult volunteer. (Trust me it isn't that bad.) We just need people who are open and available to be there for the teens. They need people to show them that they are loved and cared about. All required is for you to be available and present!
- We are in real need for a female leader.
- And we need snacks! If you like shopping for food, we can use your skills! Teens love to eat and often the way to their attention is through their stomachs! So pick us up a bag of chips, pop, or we can be healthy too -- some carrot sticks? Veggie Crisps? Be creative ... or not.
- Substitute volunteers for when we cannot make it on a Wednesday night. We get sick sometimes, and need people who can be here when we can't. We are pretty good about setting up plans and having things ready for those who would be willing to take care of those things we need done.
- And Prayer Partners.
We have plenty of things going on during the year, and always appreciate YOUR help anytime, and also with our Sunday morning Rite 13 and J2A classes as well!
Stay tuned to our schedule and even sign up for our newsletter to keep up with what we are doing throughout the year - ..... Please come and talk to us about how you can show your love and support for our students!
Thank you! - Miguel |

ACTING APOSTLES to perform Nov 6th
Our new Church School group, the Acting Apostles (kids in grades 5 & 6) are working hard on their first performance, which will be at the 10:00 a.m. service on Sunday, Nov. 6. They've been researching each character, thinking about how this person would look and talk, and developing a script. We're eager to share the results with the congregation! Our show will be take the place of the sermon on that All Saints Sunday. Newcomers are welcome to join in, so if you know any kids in this age group, feel free to invite them to St. Luke's. The Apostles' next show will be our very special Christmas Eve Pageant, in which all kids are invited to participate. Thanks for your support!

ADULT FORUM | | |
"What in the World is Going On?"
On Sunday, October 2, the Adult Forum will continue this series with David Larson, retired Professor of Sociology at SUNY Fredonia. In this session Dr. Larson will lead us in a discussion regarding the social and cultural "disasters" we have been experiencing around the world. To a greater degree we have been affected by not just turmoil in the Middle East and in Asia, but also the way in which the "natural" disasters have changed our lives. "What in the World is Going On?" - we will hope to get a handle on some of this... Be sure to join us at 9:00 am in the undercroft.
The following Sunday, October 9, Fr. Eric will help us conclude the series with a discussion about what religion has to do with all that we have discussed over the past three weeks. |

Blessing of the Animals - Oct 4th
| |
St. Francis' Day -- Tuesday, October 4th
Blessing of the Animals will be held at St. Luke's at 5:30 p.m. Join us as we give thanks for our pets. All are welcome, along with pets who are leashed or contained. Food and blanket donations for the Humane Society are also welcome.
Weather permitting the service will be held in the "prayer garden" next to the Thrift Shop. |

Deanery Council to prepare for Diocese's Future
Our delegates and alternates to Diocesan Convention {Donna Phillippi, Catherine Way and Matt Smith; Jennifer Pierce and Tom Rankin} will be meeting on October 9 with our Bishop and other churches' representatives. On the docket will be a variety of proposed changes to "business as usual" in our diocese - starting with an opportunity to share our stories. Bishop Franklin has requested that each congregation prepare two narratives: "One that illustrates a moment of crisis for the congregation and one that illustrates hope for the future of the congregation. At the pre-convention meeting those stories will be shared and the deanery will decide on one story in each category to share with the whole convention."
Presumably these stories will shed light on "Episcopal life in the Southern Tier," and inform funding priorities for the future. If you've got ideas for St. Luke's presentation or would like to attend the deanery meeting (or the Convention) talk to Fr. Eric, Mother Susan or Donna Phillippi! |

WANTED: United Thank Offering Coordinator
The United Thank Offering Ingathering is scheduled for Sunday Oct. 16. We need a coordinator for this important, mission-focused offering at St. Luke's.
The Coordinator:
- Publicizes the date and why the UTO exists
- Recruits parishioners to collect the special
envelopes and boxes during each service,
Oct. 15-16
- Counts the money received (checks to
St. Luke's OR United Thank Offering are
welcomed!)
- Prepares the form reporting how much we are
sending for the UTO's good work
- If available, presents our check at the
Diocesan Convention Eucharist on Oct. 29.

If you're interested or would like to know more, please contact Mother Susan. Thank You!

Thank you, from the JOURNEYs Weekenders
The leaders and "campers" at last weekend's Journeys Retreat would like to express their appreciation to St. Luke's for hosting such a great event. Sorry if we left any rooms disheveled or inconvenienced other programs on Sunday! Please know that it was all worthwhile for this group of 17 enthusiastic Junior-High participants, four responsible Senior-High counselors, and four exhausted adults. |
|
Thank you, St. Luke's Church Family
We wish to express to the clergy and our entire church family our deep appreciation for your continuous loving and caring thoughts and prayers these last several months. Your many acts of kindness, support and sympathy have helped so much to sustain us and will always be remembered.
Thank you and God bless you all.
-- Alta Martenson and Family |
