The Power of Healing | | |
Unfortunately, when some of us hear about healing in the context of church, we think of "faith healing," often associated with the worst kind of fake spiritual snake oil salesmen, guys with big hair and shiny suits promising that (for a donation) they will guarantee a miracle just for you.
Healing, real faith healing, actually has a long and distinguished history in the church. In the Bible Jesus and his disciples healed many people in body, mind and spirit and the letter of James tells us, "Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up." (5:14-15) Prayers for healing, like all prayer, are not a magical formula, but an act of trust and faith as we continually place ourselves and those we care about in the loving hands of God.
As a parish whose patron saint is Luke, the Blessed Physician, we have a strong connection with the ministry of healing. We make no guarantees, but we can testify to the amazing ways that God has brought healing in a variety of ways to ourselves and those we know and love. Sometimes the healing is physical and sometimes it is a healing of the heart, mind and soul as we experience a fresh experience of God's love and grace. We sometimes resist these opportunities, thinking that we should "tough it out" or that such prayers are meant only for the gravely ill. Yet it is my experience that life gives us enough worries, wounds and scars that we all can benefit from healing all the time.
The ministry of healing is exercised here in several ways. First, we have a prayer circle. If you or someone you know needs immediate prayers, contact Ann Lamp at 488-9039, Dorothy Anderson at 488-1934 or the office at 483-6405 and prayers will be offered right away. You can also put someone on the Sunday prayer list for the prayers of the people. Clergy regularly visit the sick at home and in the hospital and anoint them.
We also offer two regular opportunities for sacramental healing. On the fourth Sunday of every month we have healing prayers right after the blessing at 8 am and during communion at 10 am. We also have a weekly healing service on Thursdays at 12:05 pm. It lasts a half hour and is followed by a simple lunch. If you are downtown I strongly urge you to come to this service. It provides a nice boost in the middle of the week and includes Holy Communion. Nothing weird or scary happens, just a simple time of peace and fellowship. I'd really like to see participation in this service grow. Put it on your calendar or cell phone and try to make it at least once to try it out in the coming weeks.
Faithfully,
Fr. Eric |

CHURCH SCHOOL's Great Beginnings:
Classes for kids in pre-school through sixth grade will begin at 9 a.m. on Sept. 18, our "Kick Off Sunday."
The theme of the year for grades Pre-K through grade 4 will be "Great Beginnings." We'll return to the very beginning with the Creation Story found in Genesis ch. 1. Not as a science text but as a God text, we'll look at God's love for the world and his declaration that it's all good. (Now, how do we take better care of it?)
Another great beginning, we hope, for our older kids, entering grades 5 & 6, will be a new class dubbed "The Acting Apostles." Since this group of students has proven their interest in drama and music, they'll be preparing one-act shows to present at the 10 a.m. service every six weeks or so. We'll start upstairs in the Scripture Tent, but also have sessions for creating our costumes and props, rehearsing a song, etc.
Adults interested in helping with any of these classes are urged to get in touch with Mother Susan soon. The Rotation Workshops will only require two weeks per subject this time. The Acting Apostles will be a six-week stint, though you could help in a particular area for just a week or two.
This year is going to be soooo good! Why not invite a family to join you at church this fall? We've got the gifts to grow, so let's get started!

STAR Students to receive Weekly Prizes!
Everybody loves prizes! As an extra incentive for kids to "enjoy Church School responsibly," we'll have a Prize Box after church for those who earn a special ticket in class. Teachers will have the tickets, to distribute at the end of class for good behavior. (Parents, you can withhold the ticket if that doesn't continue during church!) Kids who aren't staying for 10:00 can find me in the sacristy. I'm hoping this incentive system will help make sure Sunday mornings are enjoyable for everybody. Contact Mother Susan if you have questions.

ADULT FORUM | | |
The Forum will begin with a special session on September 11th and will surround the theme:
"9/11/01 - 9/11/11: What has changed?
How have you changed?"
Most people remember where they were and what they were doing on September 11, 2001, but what have we learned since then - about our world and about ourselves?
You are invited to a very special Adult Forum on Sunday, September 11 at 9:00 am in the Undercroft.
We will be having a special discussion regarding this event and the above questions.
Please join us for this opportunity for reflection and discussion.
The following week, September 18th, the Forum will begin a series entitled "What in the World is Going On?"
There have been copious amounts of discussion regarding what is happening globally...weather-wise, cultural-wise, and social-wise. "Natural" disasters seem to be occurring more frequently and with great damage. There is war and hatred everywhere we turn. All of this led the Adult Forum Committee to wonder - "What in the World is Going On?"
We will begin this series with presentations and discussions with the Red Cross and WCA regarding disaster preparedness. In the ensuing weeks we will then take a look at scientific aspects and cultural/social aspects, bringing the discussion to a close in October on the religious aspects.
Be sure to join us at 9:00 am in the undercroft
If you have any questions, thoughts, or suggestions regarding the Adult Forum, please speak to any member of the Forum Planning Committee: Janet Card, Linda Dawson, Peter Dawson, Jim Holton, Paul Johnson, Paula Pickett, or myself. Plus if you have any questions or suggestions regarding Adult Formation in general, please talk to Barbara Bumsted. |

Christian Education for Middle and High School
We would like to tell you of all that is going on for this year and invite you to be a part of these programs. We're letting you know what we need in the "How you can help"sections.
Rite 13- (For grades 7-8) is our Sunday morning class for older middle school students. A great year is planned for this class as we begin preparing our kids to move from childhood into adolescents and beyond. Miguel Covarrubias leads this class this year. See you Sunday, September 18th!
J2A - (For grades 9-11) is our Sunday morning class for younger high school students. This class prepares students for just what the name says the "Journey to Adulthood". Summer of 2011 we had a great pilgrimage to England and our Anglican "roots." Our next class will begin preparing for their pilgrimage in 2 years. Matt and Cathy Smith will be teaching the J2A class this year. J2A meets every Sunday morning at 9 am beginning September 18th!
For both the Rite 13 and J2A classes, adults are invited and welcomed in supporting these programs by:
- Volunteering to be a substitute teacher for when regular leaders cannot be at class;
- We need friends who are willing to provide donuts for class each week;
- And we need your prayers, so why not volunteer to be a Prayer Partner

S.L.Y. -- The Children of the rEVOLution and
rEVOLutionaries: (for grades 7-12)
We are very excited about our new Wednesday night programs! We are creating a community for teens grades 7-12 to come and just be themselves. This is a place for them to belong and know that they are loved and accepted.
Our program begins on Wed, Sept 14th. We meet every Wednesday night from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.
You can offer to help by:
- Volunteering to be present 1,2,3 or even 4 Wednesdays a month. (Trust me it isn't that bad)
- We are in real need for a female leader
- We need volunteers to provide snacks
- Substitute volunteers for when leaders are not available on a Wednesday night.
- Prayer Partners
Talk with Miguel and offer yourself to our teens! |
