The Good Old Summertime
Do you remember this time of year when you were a kid? Summer seemed to spread out like an endless vista of delight: no school, warm weather, fun of all kinds. As we get older and busier, summer inevitably loses some of its magic. Yet it still is my favorite time of year, full of the promise of good things.
This summer I am looking forward to many good things, including: hearing the Presiding Bishop at Chautauqua on July 3rd, running in the Firecracker 10K on July 4th, the Fourth St. Café outing on July 12th, the Loop the Lake bike ride on July 16th, the first confirmation visit by Bishop Franklin on July 17th, vacation in New England July 23-August 4, the rummage sale August 5-6, serving as chaplain at Junior High Camp August 7-13, and competing in my first triathlon August 27. I also look forward to visits and concerts at Chautauqua and to some less structured time in the office and at home. I have my usual stack of books I hope to get to as well.
We live in one of the best areas in the country for recreation of all kinds. Chautauqua Lake, Allegany, Midway and Long Point State Parks, Chautauqua Institution, Bemus Point, the Chautauqua Gorge, and a whole procession of events like the County Fair and Gerry Rodeo among many others. It's not actually possible to do everything in one summer, but it's fun to try! It's also important to take time during the summer to unplug a bit, to go for a walk or sit on the porch and simply be for a while. Our church schedule during the summer is intentionally lighter. Somehow I find worship a little easier when Sunday mornings aren't as packed with meetings and activities.
Whatever your summer plans, whether you are here in this corner of paradise or traveling, I wish you God's blessing of peace and refreshment of spirit.
--Fr. Eric

Meet the Bishop on July 17
Our new bishop, The Rt. Rev. R. William (Bill) Franklin, will be coming to St. Luke's for his first official visitation on July 17. He'll baptize, confirm and receive a wonderful group of children, teens and adults; and stay for a lunch reception, and finally a meeting with the Vestry.
We know you'll enjoy getting to know "Bishop Bill" as we've enjoyed knowing him for about twenty years, since he taught us Church History in Seminary. Engaging, energetic and really smart, +Bill is on a mission to get to know as many members of the diocese as possible, and to learn the gifts for ministry in each parish, as he charts a course for our common life.
If you'd like to help with the reception on July 17, please let us or Kim know. Mostly we hope you'll put July 17 at 10 a.m. on your calendar: Meet the Bishop at St. Luke's! -- Susan & Eric
