| Diocesan Summer Camps - 2011 | | |
A NEW THING
For all the young people: summer is almost here,
and it's time to get ready for the Diocesan camps.
Sr. High Conference 6/26 to 7/2;
Jr. High 8/7-13;
and Sleep Away 8/14-17 (Sun. - Wed.)
Since I can't imagine anyone NOT wanting to go to camp, let me see if I can cover some of the major objections:
- IT'S TOO FAR AWAY. Wrong. Both Sleep Away and Senior High Conference are held at Lake Chautauqua Lutheran Center (LCLC), which is all of about 20 minutes from the farthest reaches of Jamestown. You pass it on the way to the Parish Picnic! Junior High Camp (at the Dunkirk Conference Center) - about 40 minutes. I'll bet you've traveled farther for soccer matches.
- I WON'T KNOW ANYONE THERE. Again, probably wrong. The director for Sleep Away is Deacon Cathy Smith, and the director for Sr. High (and a counselor for Jr. High) is Jay Phillippi - both of whom most of you have known most of your lives. If you mean you won't know any other campers, hey, bring a friend! They don't have to be Episcopalian! And, you are CERTAIN to make at least one very good new friend. Most of the young people we know (including our daughter) are still friends with the people they met at camp - 10 or 12 years ago.
- I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT. Not a problem - just ask Jay or Cathy - they can clue you in. You won't be forced to do anything you don't want to do, but you will be given the opportunity to try a bunch of new and exciting things. Plus check out photos and videos at the diocesan youth website www.eyouthwny.org
- IT'S TOO EXPENSIVE. Ahh, the biggie. First of all, for the most part, our Diocesan Camps cost less than many band, football, and soccer camps and other local camps. Secondly, there are scholarships available!! (Don't be embarrassed to ask - we did!) There are parish funds available as well as diocesan funds for your use, so talk to Fr. Eric or Mother Susan!
