IT's Time to Picnic!

St. Luke's Church Family will gather for the Annual Parish Picnic on Sunday, June 12th, 2011 at YMCA Camp Onyahsa on Chautauqua Lake at Dewittville. Come early, our worship service will begin at 10:30 AM. (There is NO 10 o'clock service at the church that day.)  We'll celebrate Holy Communion, recognize our church school kids and teachers, and enjoy a delicious potluck feast lunch provided by YOU!  Lake activities will also be available following lunch time.

Here's a way to help you decide what to bring to the picnic.  Of course, you are welcome to bring whatever favorite food item it is that you enjoy, or that you like to prepare.  But if you're standing there wondering what to bring, try this:

Last names      A - I - "main dish" or salad;

                        J - Q - dessert;

                        R - Z - snacks or appetizer

Also bring along your own table service: plates, plastic-ware, serving utensils and something other to grill, if you desire.  St. Luke's will provide:

Hot-dogs and Buns, plus condiments

                  Punch and coffee

                  Extra plates, plastic utensils, and cups

Most importantly, bring yourself and your family, as we enjoy worship at 10:30, Church School prizes, lunch and then time to play/swim/canoe/kayak in the lake.  Don't miss the fun!

Directions:  (From Jamestown) Take I-86 west, continue to follow Rt. 430 up the lake, passing by Midway.   Look for "the Cheese House" on your right when you get to Dewittville, and Camp Onyahsa will be your next left.

 Church School Year Draws to a Close

With just a couple of weeks left in the program year, the Church School will divide into special workshops on May 29 and June 5.  The "Green" group will meet upstairs in the Scripture Tent room to rehearse "The First Parish Meeting of the Church in Jerusalem" - the skit they'll present at the Parish Picnic, June 12.  The other two groups, Purple and Red, will meet downstairs in the Bread of Heaven room for a "Cinema" presentation on May 29, and a Communion Bread-Baking workshop on June 5.  Both these sessions count toward the Class Attendance prizes, awarded at the picnic, and it's a tight race so don't miss any of the fun we have together on Sundays!

Adult Forum - 9 am Sunday, stage area

Finishing out our month-long theme of featuring some of our parishioners, on May 29, Ruth Yancey Walton, Nurse Manager of the Intensive Care Unit at WCA Hospital will.  Ruth will be on hand to talk with us about some of her experiences and how her faith gets her through her day.  Ruth will also discuss advance directives as an introduction to a series and/or session that will be done in the fall (most likely independent of the Forum) about Death & Dying.  Although not one's favorite subject, we do need to be prepared for that time and to be sure that our family knows our wishes.  We will have forms and booklets to share with you.  The Forum begins at 9:00 am on the stage area of the undercroft.

Sunday, June 5 will be the last Forum of the program year.  Fr. Eric and the NCD Team will be on hand to discuss "Small Groups."

Playful Pentecost

This year, the annual Parish Picnic (June 12) fallspentecost flame on the feast of Pentecost - adding extra "holy mischief" to our fun at the lake!  Members of the Junior Youth Group will present a skit during the service, called "The First Parish Meeting of the Church of Jerusalem."  Rehearsals for the skit take place during Sunday Youth Night and at Church School on May 29 & June 5, for kids in 3rd thru 6th grade! Talk to Mother Susan if you'd like to know more about participating in this skit.

READ A BUNCH of BOOKS THIS SUMMER:

Borders/Waldenbooks is again offering their "Double-Dog Dare Challenge" to kids age 12 and under. Read ten books, list them on the form available at church, and bring it to Waldenbooks or Borders to get a free book! The offer runs June 1 - September 5.  I'll post a list in the undercroft to share the titles you've read, in case anyone wants a recommendation.

LOVE WINS: Book Study Tuesdays in June

"Love Wins" is a new book by evangelical pastor Rob Bell and is subtitled, "A Book About Heaven, Hell, and the Fate of Every Person Who Ever Lived." Fr. Eric will lead a discussion of the book Tuesday nights in June beginning the 7th.  In the book, Rob Bell addresses one of the most controversial issues of faith-the afterlife-arguing, would a loving God send people to eternal torment forever...? Bell's message is decidedly hopeful-eternal life doesn't start when we die; it starts right now. And ultimately, Love Wins.  You can buy the book online or at most book stores.  Plan to attend the book discussion, and speak to Fr. Eric to answer any questions.

The Power of Healing

 Are you looking for a chance to refocus spiritually during the week?  Would you appreciate a quiet service with time for reflection?  Are you yearning to experience God's healing grace in your life?  Well, look no further.  You are invited to come to the chapel on Wednesdays at 12:05 pm for our weekly healing service and communion.  The service lasts 30 minutes and is followed by an optional salad lunch in the undercroft.  Come check it out.
