A Word from Your Vestry

My family has advised me that when I adopt a new-to-me technology, it probably is very close to being obsolete!  Imagine my excitement when traveling with Father Eric on route to one of our 'spiritual' adventures while cross country skiing at Allegany State Park, he amazed me with his iPod which could transmit its message, in this case Eugene Peterson's Daily Message program for reading the Bible, over the care radio speakers.  Wow!  I could do this, and it actually is fairly new technology, after all, Father Eric is using at the present time.

To my amazement, I was able to set it up, and it worked perfectly.  I even had a bit of smugness as I could tell people 'oh yeah, I have that in my car.'  What a wonder - this little iPod contains a complete reading of the Bible.  It is sectioned in to convenient 10-15 minute daily readings.  This is perfect for disciplining me to stay in touch with the Bible while driving to and from Jamestown.

Alas, one day on my way to the Ellery Landfill, while cresting a very high hill a mortal struggle broke out, Eugene Peterson was overpowered by of all people, Lady Gaga belting out 'Poker Face.'  They battled back and forth for the control of the radio speakers, spiritual versus secular.  Lady Gaga was on the same radio frequency as my iPod setup, and was not to be denied.

In thinking about this incident, it suddenly occurred to me that God had provided a glimpse of my own life.  The same battle goes on in me every day, and that is why I need His power to gain control of the 'speakers.'

LOVE WINS: Book Study Tuesdays in June

Have you heard the buzz about "Love Wins?"  It is a new book by evangelical pastor Rob Bell and is subtitled, "A Book About Heaven, Hell, and the Fate of Every Person Who Ever Lived." Rob Bell addresses one of the most controversial issues of faith-the afterlife-arguing, would a loving God send people to eternal torment forever...? With searing insight, Bell puts hell on trial, and his message is decidedly hopeful-eternal life doesn't start when we die; it starts right now. And ultimately, Love Wins.  Fr. Eric will be leading a discussion of the book for four Tuesday nights beginning June 7th.  You can buy the book online or at most book stores and we have some copies available at church; see Barbara Bumsted for your copy, $12 each.

The Power of Healing

Are you looking for a chance to refocus spiritually during the week?  Would you appreciate a quiet service with time for reflection?  Are you yearning to experience God's healing grace in your life?  Well, look no further.  You are invited to come to the chapel on Wednesdays at 12:05 pm for our weekly healing service and communion.  The service lasts 30 minutes and is followed by an optional salad lunch in the undercroft.  Come check it out.

St. Luke's Parish Picnic - June 12th

Are you ready for the Church Picnic?  Sunday, June 12th, we'll gather at 10:30 a.m. at Camp Onyahsa, Dewittville for our Annual Church Picnic. We'll celebrate Holy Communion, recognize our church school kids and teachers, and enjoy a feast of a potluck lunch.  Lake activities will be available after lunch.

Bring a dish to pass, and something to grill.   picnic basket

St. Luke's will provide:

      Hot-dogs and Buns, plus condiments

Punch and coffee

Plates, cups and plastic utensils.

You bring the rest of the potluck! But most importantly, bring yourself and your family, as we enjoy worship at 10:30, Church School prizes, lunch and then time to play/swim/canoe/kayak in the lake.  Don't miss the fun!

Playful Pentecost

pentecost flame

This year, the annual Parish Picnic (June 12) falls on the feast of Pentecost - adding extra "holy mischief" to our fun at the lake!  Members of the Junior Youth Group will present a skit during the service, called "The First Parish Meeting of the Church of Jerusalem."  It's a humorous take on Pentecost by our favorite Christian dramatist Tom Long, whom we brought to St. Luke's about nine years ago and who wrote the scripts for our past Easter pageants, "Tale of Three Trees" and "Rescue in the Night."  Rehearsals for the skit will take place during Sunday Youth Night and at Church School on May 29 & June 5.  Kids in 3rd thru 6th grade are invited to join the show! Talk to Mother Susan for more information.
