A Season of Music

Over the years, St. Luke's has been known as a church of music.  Our lovely Aeolian-Skinner organ and choirs have graced worship here.  More recently we have added the St. Luke's band.  And we have been blessed to host a wide variety of concerts, especially through our long and fruitful relationship with the Jamestown Concert Association.  I want to highlight some special musical opportunities coming up this Spring at St. Luke's and in the community.

Friday, April 29 at 8 pm at St. Luke's

Cavatina Duo  (sponsored by the JCA)

Sunday, May 1 at 4 pm at St. Luke's

featuring a premier of a new work by Daniel Gawthrop

Choir workshop with the composer 10 am-noon.

Kudos to the members of our youth and adult choirs who are joining in the diocesan choirs on April 30 at the consecration of R. William Franklin as bishop.  We are always eager to welcome new singers in these choirs.  If you are interested, please speak to Andy Schmidt.

CHURCH SCHOOL

All church school kids are invited to come to the ART Room on Sunday, May 1st for fun activities at 9 am.  Church School classes resume on Sunday, May 8th with EASTER Celebration!

Adult Forum - 9 am Sunday, stage

Forum will resume on May 8th, with Dan Anderson introducing the great outdoors of ChautauquaCounty - and how his faith has been strengthened through the outdoors.

There are so many faith-related topics out there to be researched, dissected and discussed.  Have you ever wanted to just "go at" some research on a topic that intrigues you and then be able to share that research and discuss it?  Have you been wondering how using your faith could help change the world - or at least your view of it? St. Luke's may have just the right opportunity for you.   On Saturday, June 11 from 10:00 - 12:00 there will be an introductory/organizational meeting that would invite and engage such discussion.  The purpose of this meeting is to establish some of the guidelines and to brainstorm about topics for discussion.  Sound interesting?  Be sure to attend the planning session.   Any questions or comments, please be sure to speak with Jim Holton, Clyde Card, Paul Johnson or Barbara Bumsted.

Mothers' Day Brunch - Sunday, May 8th

Come one, come all to help us pay tribute to the wonderful women of St. Luke's.  Please join us, and bring your families, for brunch after the 10:00 service on May 8th.

The brunch follows the 10:00 service and features a medley of breakfast casseroles, fresh fruit, sweet rolls, orange juice, mimosas and coffee.  There is no need to make a reservation and there is no cost, so come let us honor the women in our midst.  No reservations are required; everyone is welcome, and there is no cost.

Gentlemen of St. Luke's:

There are lots of ways the men can help.  Saturday morning we'll be setting up the tables & chairs, come to help with the set up.  Of course there are dishes and clean up at the end of the brunch.  There is a sign-up sheet on the Bulletin board in the undercroft and/or speak with Chip Ulrich.  You may call him -

YOUTH NEWS !

Our Journey-2-Adulthood (J2A) class is preparing for a pilgrimage this year to our "roots" in England! We are in the midst of fundraising for this trip by selling Ozark Delights Lollipops for $1 a piece.  And on Sunday, May 1st, we are holding a basket auction immediately following the 10 am service to help benefit the J2A pilgrimage. Please come to support us in these undertakings!

MUSIC NEWS -- by Andy Schmidt

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the young musicians who shared their talents in our recent Lenten services.   Nine young instrumentalists participated in our Wednesday and Sunday services, including Joel Allport-Cohoon (tuba), Cassie Butler (flute), Christopher Butler (piano), Gavin Card (saxophone), Madison Card (clarinet), Maddie Pinciaro (clarinet), Olivia Pinciaro (piano), Emily Williams (cello), and Margaret Williams (oboe, piano, and violin).   You all did an extremely good job, and I certainly think all of your parents are very proud.   Many thanks to everyone who participated, and Happy Easter!

                                       -Andy Schmidt

CONFIRMATION at St Luke's

Our new bishop, R. William Franklin, will make his first official visit to St. Luke's on Sunday, July 17 for a service of confirmation at 10:00 am.  Along with our two J2A students, this iss also an opportunity for any adult in the parish to be confirmed, received or to reaffirm their baptism.  What do these terms mean?

Confirmation is for those who have been baptized into the Christian faith, but who have not been confirmed as adult members in the Episcopal, Lutheran, Roman Catholic or Orthodox branches of Christianity.  This is the sacrament in which you affirm the promises made at your baptism and receive a strengthening gift of the Holy Spirit.

Reception is for those who have been confirmed in another branch of the catholic faith, but who wish to be formally received as confirmed members of the Episcopal Church.

Reaffirmation is for those who have been confirmed or received previously, but who wish to make a public statement of renewed faith.

Classes begin on Sunday, May 15 immediately after the 10:00 am service.  Mother Susan, a lifelong Episcopalian who has been involved in the Episcopal Church at the local, diocesan and national levels, will teach these classes, and brings with her a lifetime of knowledge and experience to what she teaches.

and more for the Men of St. Luke's Church

May 15th the Men of St. Luke's will celebrate Paul Bunyan Day with outside work. Bring saws, gloves, and a desire to 'lay up wood' for God's service.  Firewood will be distributed to those in need of it. We meet for our morning Eucharist, then enjoy a leisurely lunch.  All are welcome to attend.  Even if you choose not to actively participate in preparing the firewood, come to give us moral support and advice! You can enjoy lunch, the Eucharist, the beautiful surroundings and an opportunity spend time with the guys!
