CONFIRMATION at St. Luke's

Our new bishop, R. William Franklin, will make his first official visit to St. Luke's on Sunday, July 17 for a service of confirmation at 10:00 am.  Our two J2A students will be confirmed at that service and it is also an opportunity for any adult in the parish to be confirmed, received or to reaffirm their baptism.  What do these terms mean?

Confirmation is for those who have been baptized into the Christian faith, but who have not been confirmed as adult members in the Episcopal, Lutheran, Roman Catholic or Orthodox branches of Christianity.  This is the sacrament in which you affirm the promises made at your baptism and receive a strengthening gift of the Holy Spirit.

Reception is for those who have been confirmed in another branch of the Catholic faith, but who wish to be formally received as confirmed members of the Episcopal Church.

Reaffirmation is for those who have been confirmed or received previously, but who wish to make a public statement of renewed faith.

In order to prepare for this service, we will be holding special classes which will focus on the promises you will be making and on the history, worship and core beliefs of the Episcopal Church.  You will have time during these classes to ask any questions you may have about why we do what we do.

The first class will be held on Sunday, May 15 immediately after the 10:00 am service.  Mother Susan will be teaching these classes.  A lifelong Episcopalian, Mother Susan has been involved in the Episcopal Church at the local, diocesan and national levels and brings a lifetime of knowledge and experience.

You are welcome to attend the classes even if you are not intending to be confirmed or received, or if you are just thinking about it.  Lunch will be provided.  Please let us know if you will need child care.

CHURCH SCHOOL

There are no Church schoolclasses on April 24th, Easter Day.  Come to the undercroft on May 1st for combined fun activities at 9 am.

Classes will resume on Sunday, May 8th with EASTER Celebration!

Adult Forum - 9 am Sunday, stage

There will be no Forum on Easter (April 24) and Sunday, May 1.   The Forum will resume on May 8.

On May 8, Dan Anderson will be with the Forum to discuss the great outdoors of Chautauqua County - and how his faith has been strengthened through the outdoors.

Mothers' Day Brunch

It gives the Men of St. Luke's great pleasure to invite all the mothers (and daughters of mothers) and their families to St. Luke's for our traditional Mothers' Day Brunch on May 8.  The brunch follows the 10:00 service and features a medley of breakfast casseroles, fresh fruit, sweet rolls, orange juice, mimosas and coffee.  There is no need to make a reservation and there is no cost, so come let us honor the women in our midst.

We, the Men of St. Luke's, take great delight in hosting the annual Mothers' Day Brunch on May 8.  There are plenty of opportunities to pitch in and help should you choose to join in the fun.  Please sign up on the sheet in the undercroft, or see Chip Ulrich (or call 763-7625).

YOUTH NEWS !

We have a lot going on during the month of April and on into May and want you to be aware of everything the Youth are planning!

Hope you had an opportunity to take in the Good Friday presentation of Stations of the Cross with a modern twist.  This service included movie clips corresponding to each station and was put together with the youth group members.

On Sunday, May 1st the youth will host the 10am worship service. The Sunday is themed "Viva La Vida," celebrating and living the life that God has for us. Please come and support our youth on that Sunday!

Our J2A (Journey 2 Adulthood) class is going on a pilgrimage this year! We are currently fundraising for this trip. We are selling Ozark Delights Lollipops for $1 a piece, and we will be having a basket auction immediately following the service on MAY 1st to benefit the J2A pilgrimage. We are asking for your help with basket donations for this, as well as your attendance at the auction.  Here are some ideas of the baskets we already have and that will be auctioned off on May 1st:

·   "The Basket That Lived": A Harry Potter themed basket for you and your family to have a fun HP night including a copy of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: pt 1"

dvd, blu-ray and digital copy combo pack.

·   "Grow the some life": A gardening themed basket.

·   "La Dolce Vida": (the sweet life) a basket of items donated from Labyrinth Press Coffee Company

·   And more to come!

Other ideas for auction include: A dinner for 4 at "our" house; 10 typing/keyboard lessons; a teen's guide to Facebook and the internet; what other ideas can you come up with?!

Please come to support us in these undertakings!

                                                Sincerely,  Miguel Covarrubias

Bring saws, gloves, and a desire to 'lay up wood' for God's service.  Firewood will be distributed to those in need of it. We meet for our morning Eucharist, then enjoy a leisurely lunch - if you choose not to actively participate in preparing the firewood, come to give us moral support and advice! You can still enjoy the lunch, the Eucharist, and the beautiful surroundings.
