Keeping a Holy Lent | | |
At the most recent Adult Forum we noted that the traditional disciplines of Lent are really things that are meant to be part of our Christian life all year long. The forty days of Lent are a great opportunity to get back on track and refocus on putting God back at the center of our lives. Here are some ideas for incorporating these disciplines in your life:
1. Prayer & Worship. One strategy is to make church a higher priority & let go of the conflicts that prevent us from getting to church. We will be adding a healing service on Wednesdays at 12 noon and there is also the Lenten service at First Lutheran at the same time. For personal devotions there are tons of resources. Many people like the Forward Day by Day booklets available at church or we have our own prayer guide in booklet form or on our website.
2. Bible Study & Sacred Reading. In addition to our weekly Bible studies, you can read the lessons for each Sunday or each day in the lectionary. Or you can pick a book of the Bible and just read it to see what God says to you. I have been enjoying listening on my iPod to the Message, a contemporary translation of the Bible. This Lent I intend to read some sacred poetry each day. There are also many books available that you can use as a daily reading. And I commend our Lenten Wednesday evening program to you as well.
3. Repentance & Reconciliation. Lent is a wonderful time to identify the broken relationships in our lives and take whatever steps we can toward reconciliation. The church offers the sacrament of reconciliation as well which is a powerful way of experiencing God's forgiveness in our lives.
4. Almsgiving. Each Lent we are asked to participate in the diocesan Episcopal Community Services campaign, which supports agencies in Western New York. Others
5. Fasting & Self-Denial. As a child I was taught to give something up for Lent as a way of recognizing my dependence on God. Fasting from meat, from alcohol or from all food can be an effective way of deepening our relationship with God and intensifying our prayer life. Special recommended fast days are Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and every Wednesday and Friday in Lent.
Whatever path you take this Lent, may it lead you to new and fresh experiences of God's grace, mercy and abundant love.

YOUTH NEWS for March | |
A Cry for Help!
Ok, maybe it isn't as desperate and dire as the title makes it sound, but if you have seen the furniture and the rooms on the 3rd floor of the parish house you would agree. We need some help making our youth rooms comfortable for our teens and other guests we may have. So we are putting out the word to people that we need these things:
· Sofas- in decent shape, we need at least 3
· Chairs- recliners or other comfortable chairs
· Board games
· Electronics
o A cd player
o Dvd player
o (not needed but wanted) xbox 360
