Dust Thou Art ... ( Part 2 )
Ladies' magazines are so funny. I picked one up at the Y while working out last week. It was supposed to be a special "Women's Health" issue; but mostly it was full of ads for creams and treatments to "reduce the appearance of aging." Several promised to be nearly as good as Botox injections, for one-third the price! Good grief.
Dust we are, and to dust we shall return. Botox and creams can't change that fact. Working out and eating those five fruits-n-veggies make the intervening years more numerous and enjoyable; but eventually we shall transfer from this dusty place to God's heavenly mansions. Jesus said, "Let not your heart be troubled... you know the way... I am the way." We don't need to fear it. But preparing some of the details will ease that passage for ourselves and our loved ones.
Here's my checklist for "dust management." If you don't know whether you've done these steps, you might want to check with a family member, doctor, attorney... all of whom should have copies. We'll offer a workshop in April on preparing these items, in case you're missing some of them.
ü Advance Directive / "Living Will:" This is a written document, prepared when you're healthy for a time when you are not. It is addressed to your health care professionals, and specifies what sorts of treatments you do or do not want to receive under particular, end-of-life circumstances.
ü Health Care Proxy: This is a person, whom you trust to represent your healthcare wishes under circumstances not covered by your Advance Directive. It's important to have someone who is nearby, but NOT your doctor or attorney (and they should decline if you ask them).
ü Durable Power of Attorney: This is a person whom you designate as your legal and financial representative under certain conditions (such as illness, incapacitation, or even a trip outside the country), to make sure your bills get paid, your checks don't bounce, etc. The designation can be granted for a limited time, or can take effect when medically indicated.
\
ü Do Not Resuscitate / DNR: This document is appended to your Advance Directive, with the advice of your doctor, when it's clear that you are nearing the end of your life, and restarting your heart would only slightly prolong the inevitable passage. (Keep a copy AT HOME, too, such as a notice on your fridge for emergency personnel.)
ü Bequests, Living Trusts, Wills: Legal and financial arrangements made during your lifetime, so that your assets will be transferred to your beneficiaries upon your death. Don't leave it for the state to do it for you! Review/update your will every few years. And be sure to include the charities you care about, because the state won't.
ü Advance funeral planning, which can include pre-payment -- every funeral home offers this now. Your clergy are happy to accompany you, we've got experience! At St. Luke's we also have a form to pre-plan for your funeral service here, requesting hymns, lessons, etc. Please know that we really would prefer to commend you to God from the church; it's where the whole journey from dust to dust makes ultimate sense. Next step on the way: Ash Wednesday, with those fateful, faithful words. I'll be listening for them, too.
--Mother Susan Williams

Adult Forum - 9 am Sunday, stage
Sunday, February 27, we will begin a two-part look at "Lenten Disciplines". What are they? How do we make room for them? Do Lenten Disciplines really help? Fr. Eric and Mother Susan will share ways in which we can plan for a spiritually insightful Lent. The Forum starts at 9:00 am and is on the stage area of the Undercroft.

Mardi Gras Food and Fun | | |
On Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras, March 8, we'll hold our annual Pancake Dinner beginning at 5:00 pm. Pancakes in several varieties will be served by the Youth Group; tickets are available at the door, only $3 per person. The Bishop Overs Guild (which would usually meet that night) will be providing some decadent Desserts to accompany the pancakes!
Then at 6:30, all are welcome to take part in our second-annual Mystery Game following dinner. (The kitchen will close at 6:30 so the chefs and servers can enjoy the game, too.) This year our mystery is a spy thriller, set in colonial-era Virginia. Who has been spying on General Washington's staff, leaking information to the British? A cast of 10 character parts, and two teams of extras, will work to discover the culprit. Sign up in the undercroft if you'd like a part; and collect some colonial costuming to make it more fun. Questions? Talk or send an email to Mother Susan. |
Wednesday Night Soup Suppers in Lent
The Church season of Lent is just around the corner, Ash Wednesday is March 9th. It is time to start planning for our Wednesday Night Lenten Program and Soup Suppers! Our Wednesday evenings in Lent will begin with a worship service followed by a soup supper. We need your help by "hosting" one of the Soup Suppers. A sign-up sheet is in the Undercroft along with the "guidelines" for a soup supper. If you have any questions, please talk with Barbara Bumsted. Get a couple friends together and let's cook! |
