Dust Thou Art ... ( Part One )

Ash Wednesday arrives late this year - frequently we're into Lent by now, giving up chocolate or meat or shopping (my challenge!).  But there's no avoiding it altogether. On March 9 we hope most parishioners will make it to church for one of our services (7 am, 12 noon, 7 pm) and hear those fateful words, "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

Not that it's easy to return to dust - most caskets today are impervious to all elements, a condition reinforced by their being placed into a cement vault at the cemetery (vaults are required in NY, to prevent soil shifting and cave-ins). It's a far cry from what the Bible imagined, I'm sure, but it is the modern condition. (Personally I'll probably choose to speed things up through cremation.)

The combination of a recent funeral and a conversation with my father-in-law, who has been arranging end-of-life matters for his wife but not for himself, put me in mind of such things a little ahead of my Ash Wednesday sermon. It doesn't make sense to ignore the inevitability of death, and how to meet it well.  Even the NY legislature seems to agree on this topic, passing a new section of public health law (section 2997) that just kicked into effect last week:

If a patient is diagnosed with a terminal illness or condition [defined as six months or less to live], the patient's attending health care practitioner shall offer to provide the patient with information and counseling regarding palliative care and end-of-life options appropriate to the patient...

If the patient is not able to make decisions, the health-care proxy has the conversation. If the attending doctor doesn't want to talk about it (!), she or he must refer the discussion to a colleague.  There's no avoiding it.

New York is ahead of the curve in making this discussion mandatory; however, it doesn't provide oversight or disciplinary measures for failing to comply.  Hopefully all our local doctors know about the law and are comfortable with what it intends: discussing the dignity of life and of death, in time to make plans with loved ones, Hospice, and others who can influence a peaceful passage.

Next issue, I'll review some of the ways you can get ready, well in advance of having that conversation with your doctor.  Dustiness is our condition, friends. It must be dealt with eventually - but some ways are a whole lot better than others.  Celebrate each of the dusty days we are given, with Alleluias to the last. Even in Lent.

Yours in Christ's eternity - Mother Susan

CHURCH SCHOOL: Thankful in times of trial

ChurchSchoolThankful in times of trial

Meet Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, three faithful young men who were thrown into the fiery furnace when they refused to worship an idol.  Those familiar with "Veggie Tales" (left) may recognize them as "Rack, Shack and Benny," and yes we'll be viewing that movie as part of our course!  New teachers and assistants are welcome to join in the fun, as we get "Thankful to God in Times of Trial." Contact Mother Susan to find out more.

Adult Forum - 9 am Sunday, stage

On Sunday, February 20, the Adult Forum will again feature members of our parish.  Our Deacon, Cathy Basile Smith, will join us to talk about the Diaconate - what it is and what her responsibilities are.  She will also share with us her process of becoming an ordained Deacon.

The Following Sunday, February 27, we will begin a two-part look at "Lenten Disciplines".  What are they?  How do we make room for them?  Do Lenten Disciplines really help?  Fr. Eric and Mother Susan will share ways in which we can plan for a spiritually insightful Lent.  The Forum starts at 9:00 am and is on the stage area of the Undercroft.

WEDNESDAY GROUP in February

he Wednesday Group, our ministry with senior citizens, gathers at 11:30 a.m. on Feb. 23 for Holy Eucharist, luncheon and a fascinating program. This month our topic is our local "Radio For the Arts" station, WRFA which broadcasts at 107.9 FM.  You'll enjoy learning about the station's history, mission, and program line-up from WRFA's General Manager Dennis Drew (yes that's him on the posters), and St. Luke's own Jay Phillippi who hosts a program called "From the Phlipside." Join us! If you need a ride we'll arrange that too. Call the church office for more information.

Mardi Gras Food and Fun

On Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras, March 8, we'll hold our annual Pancake Dinner beginning at 5:00 pm.  Pancakes in several varieties will be served by the Youth Group; tickets are available at the door, only $3 per person.  The Bishop Overs Guild (which would usually meet that night) will be providing some decadent Desserts to accompany the pancakes!

Then at 6:30, all are welcome to take part in our second-annual Mystery Game following dinner.  (The kitchen will close at 6:30 so the chefs and servers can enjoy the game, too.) This year our mystery is a spy thriller, set in colonial-era Virginia. Who has been spying on General Washington's staff, leaking information to the British?  A cast of 10 character parts, and two teams of extras, will work to discover the culprit.  Sign up in the undercroft if you'd like a part; and collect some colonial costuming to make it more fun. Questions? Talk or send an email to Mother Susan.

Wednesday Night Soup Suppers in Lent

Although Lent and Easter arrive late this year, it is time to start planning for our Wednesday Night Lenten Program!  Our Wednesday evenings in Lent will begin with a worship service followed by a soup supper and then a program. We need your help by signing up to "host" one of the Soup Suppers.   A sign-up sheet is in the Undercroft along with the "guidelines" for a soup supper.  If you have any questions, please talk with Barbara Bumsted.

Thumbs Up and Congratulations to ...

Thumbs up Mother Susan and Father Eric!

Featured clergy in the Post Journal on Valentine's Day!  We love you, too!

Youth Choir Schedule

Sunday February 20 - Youth choir will rehearse at 9:30 to sing at the 10:00 service.  Also, youth choir will rehearse again that same day at 5:00 for a future performance.

St. Luke's Prayer Circle

St Luke's has a wonderful resource that quietly works "under the radar".  It's the Prayer Circle.

My brother Neil was born a week and a day after my fourth birthday. That entire year family friends told me I was getting a baby for my birthday in August. So when he was born I thought he was mine. We were very close growing up. He lives near LA and is a VP of a global company. His work takes him all over the world. When he was diagnosed with cancer in the summer of 2009, I was devastated. Cancer had already taken the lives of our mom, her mother and her brother - all way too young! As I began to pray, I felt like this was too big to deal with by myself and I turned to the Prayer Circle of St. Luke's. This group enveloped me with their care and compassion. I am a person that appreciates being able to share my concerns and the enormous gravity of Neil's situation required it for me. He endured a surgery no one should have to undergo and put all his effort into full recovery. I was at a trade show in October when I got his text message - no cancer! And an email last month after yet another scan, no cancer! Not remission, but NO CANCER! Thanks be to God. And thanks also to my St. Luke's family for your prayers. I recommend the Prayer Circle to anyone who's overwhelmed with a problem. You can share as little or as much detail with them as you wish. They pray God's will be done. And somehow it helps.

                                    Praise God!  Linda Dawson

You may contact any individual prayer member of the circle or call the church office with your request. Information about the Prayer Circles is available in our church tract racks.
