Mixed Feelings

I don't know about you, but increasingly I find the world a confusing place.  Events happen so rapidly that it is hard to keep up with what's going on, let alone what it all means or how we are supposed to feel about it.  And we are constantly bombarded by "experts" and by strident voices on the left and right telling us what we should think.

Egypt is just the most recent example of this.  I feel torn as an American between celebrating and supporting the people of Egypt as they cry out for self-determination and democracy, and worrying about whether this will mean the rise of a fundamentalist, anti-American and anti-Israel regime.  Rightly or wrongly, I think we in America are still haunted by images of Iran.

I really loved hearing from Maureen Rovegno last Sunday about the exciting Abrahamic religions and multi-faith efforts at Chautuaqua.  Our friend Ross Mackenzie was a prime mover in this effort years ago and I am glad to see his work continuing there.  I fully support greater understanding and better relationships between the world's religions.  Wouldn't it be wonderful to see religion even more as a force for peace and justice in the world, and not just division and hatred.  Understanding and tolerance especially in religion are keys to a peaceful world future.

Yet here too I have mixed feelings.  While I support efforts to build relationships and partnerships between Christianity and other religions, I do not therefore believe that all religions are equally valid.  As a Christian, it is my sincere prayer that all people everywhere should come to know Jesus Christ and experience His saving grace.  So I want to strike a balance between aggressive in-your-face proselytizing on the one hand and anything-goes relativism on the other.  It is our duty to "bear witness to the faith that is in us," while "respecting the dignity of every human being."  That's a hard balance to maintain, but I believe it is crucial to living faithfully in this confusing and pluralistic world.

For the rest of Epiphany, we'll meet three faithful young men - Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego - who were thrown into the fiery furnace when they refused to worship an idol.  Those familiar with "Veggie Tales" (left) may recognize them as "Rack, Shack and Benny," and yes we'll be viewing that movie as part of our course! New teachers and assistants are welcome to join in the fun, as we get "Thankful to God in Times of Trial." Contact Mother Susan to find out more.

Adult Forum - 9 am Sundays, stage

On Sunday, February 13, the Adult Forum will feature the final installment on the Chautauqua series. Jon Schmitz, Archivist and Historian for Chautauqua Institution will be on hand to talk about the history of Chautauqua in general, with emphasis on the history of the Department of Religion.  Forum is at 9:00 am on the stage area of the Undercroft.

Then on Sunday, February 20, the Forum will shift gears back to featuring members of our parish.  Cathy Basile Smith, Deacon, will join us to talk with us about the Diaconate - what it is and what are her responsibilities, and will also share with us her process of becoming an ordained Deacon.

WEEKLY YOUTH NIGHT is Wednesdays!

Announcements for youth:

Ø      Don't forget weekly Youth Group!  Every Wednesday night from 7-9 pm for grades 7-12.

Ø      There's a special Youth Night on Friday Feb. 18. We'll vote on the activity this Wednesday so be there! This event is for grades 7-12.

Additional adult volunteers are needed to provide support to both the Youth Ministry staff and the kids. Offering to bring snacks would also be good! Contact Miguel to offer yourself: stlukesyth@gmail.com

Mardi Gras Murder Mystery 2

It was a big hit last year, so on Mardi Gras (aka Shrove Tuesday), March 8th, join in the fun of a role-playing Mystery in the undercroft.  This year, we'll have a script with more parts for actors: I found one that can take up to 24 players. Plus there's always room for spectators, as we all try to figure out "who-dunnit".  Sign up in the Undercroft if you would like a part! The fun will begin with pancakes - please arrive by 6:30 pm. We'll end about 8:00 pm.  I'll assign parts and send out the notices one week before, so you can find a costume (optional, but so much fun!).  Who will be the victim... and who's the culprit?  Find out on Mardi Gras!

Wednesday Night Soup Suppers in Lent

Where does the time go?  Although Lent and Easter are late this year, it is already time to plan for the Wednesday Night Lenten Program!  We will again offer a worship service followed by a soup supper and then a short program.  To that end, we need folks to begin signing up to help "host" one of the Soup Suppers. A sign-up sheet is in the Undercroft along with the "guidelines" for a soup supper.  If you have any questions, please talk with Barbara Bumsted.

Thank you, from the Recio Family

Thank you to everyone at St Luke's for all your help, support, love and prayers for Daniel and the whole Recio family, and for our mom and grandmother, Jane Campbell.  You have all been such a beautiful support to her.

Daniel was flown home on Friday, Feb 4th, by Wings Flight of Hope.  Pilot Joey DeMarco gave Daniel the controls and he had the opportunity to fly the plane!  About 50 fifty people met them at the airport when they arrived.  Coming home has been wonderful!

Daniel's feeding tube was removed while at John's Hopkins and he has gained 21 pounds!! Yea, Daniel!  And he will receive outpatient physical therapy 3 times a week at the local hospital. Daniel is currently able to bear weight with assistance, and is able to take a couple steps with assistance.

Daniel started back to school on Monday, Feb 7th attending WellsvilleMiddle School in the 8th grade with his brother Mitchell.  Daniel and Sara even arrived home in time to celebrate sister Katie's 16th birthday on Feb 7th!
