Doing our Part to End Poverty

Several years ago our diocese and our parish began participating in the global effort to end poverty through the Millennium Development Goals (MDG's).  Each year St. Luke's, in addition to our giving to local outreach efforts in the Jamestown area, also gives 0.7% of our total budget for global outreach.  Jennifer Pierce is our MDG coordinator and recommends agencies to the vestry.  I want to share with you where that money went this year.

Our total gift this year was $3,570.50 and it was split equally between two agencies.  The first, Five Talents, is based in Virginia and has a mission "to fight poverty, create jobs and transform lives by empowering the poor in developing countries using innovative savings and microcredit programs, business training and spiritual development."  They are endorsed by no less than Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury.  Jennifer recommended them specifically because of their excellent work in the Sudan, whose people have been suffering terribly from war and starvation.

The second organization is called Pure Water for the World.  Their mission is to provide clean potable water which is perhaps the most important step toward improving overall health in the Third World.  Jennifer recommended them because they were among the most effective organizations in Haiti after the earthquake (whose anniversary we just marked this past week).  This year they have provided 314,000 gallons of chlorinated water to 42 sites reaching 124,000 people every day.  384 more schools now have clean water, hygiene education curriculum and teacher training.  0ver 40,000 more children now have safe drinking water and have access to hygiene education.

Feel free to talk to Jennifer if you would like to learn more about these agencies or about the MDG's.                                                                                         --Fr. Eric

CHURCH SCHOOL Thankful for Healing

Our new session for Church School in our series "Thankful to God for... Healing."  The story is in Acts chapter 3, where the disciples Peter and John pray over a lame man, and he is healed.  The children will be asked to think about times they have prayed for the sick, or been prayed for themselves. What do we think happens? What should be our response to news of healing? (Here's a clue: The formerly lame man leaps up and starts praising God while jumping for joy!)

Why not bring a friend to Church School?

"Meet the Candidates"

On Sunday, January 16 the Adult Forum will continue with the theme of getting know people in our parish. This session will feature our annual "Meet the Candidates".  Our Vestry and Wardens not only are responsible for seeing that things run smoothly and for the budget, but they are also the eyes and ears of all of us.  We invite you to get to know the candidates better. Come to the Forum at 9:00 on the stage area of the Undercroft.

"What is Chautauqua Institution?"

On Sunday, January 23 (ahead of the Monday, January 31 PBS documentary on Chautauqua Institution) the Forum has invited Sherra Babcock, Director of Education at Chautauqua, to come and talk with us about this gem we have up the lake.

Weekly YOUTH NIGHT is Wednesdays !

This is a group for teens grades 7-12; a place for teens to come and be themselves.  If you are a teen and are looking for a safe place to explore your faith, this is it; 7-9 pm in Parish house, 3rd floor.  Volunteer support is needed to provide support to both the Youth Ministry staff and the kids. Snacks would also be good! Contact Miguel to offer yourself: stlukesyth@gmail.com

On Sunday the 16th  the Youth Members will go bowling at Jamestown Bowling Company. Same time for youth night.  Youth choir at 5, dinner at 6, then head over to the lanes at 6:30 or 7 depending on clean up. Bring $5.50 per person for 2 games! We should be back at the church by 8:30.

WEDNESDAY GROUP- January 26th

The Wednesday Group is our monthly group for seniors and generally meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month.  This month Mother Susan will be showing the slides of St. Luke's history that she and Pat Martonis put together for our 175th Anniversary in 2009. The Wednesday Group is a special time for senior members of our parish to gather together for worship, lunch and a program in the undercroft at St. Luke's.  Coffee is available from 11 am, the service is at 11:30 and the luncheon and program follow.  We are finished by 2 pm.  For more information, call the church office, 483-6405, or Liz McIntyre, 664-2873.

Bishop's Consecration Service, April 30th

"Hard copies" of the Volunteer Sign-Up form are now available in the church, on the table near the font area. They're purple (of course), and list the many ways parishioners can help welcome our new Bishop, Dr. R. William Franklin, and his distinguished guests (including the Presiding Bishop) on April 30 in Buffalo. We especially need to know about choir members soon! Talk to Mother Susan for more information.

And, speaking of Bishops... A Celebration of Bishop Michael Garrison's Episcopacy, to which all are invited, will be held on Sunday, March 6, 2011 beginning at 3 pm with Holy Eucharist at St. Paul's Cathedral, Buffalo.  A dinner reception will follow with live entertainment and dancing at Salvatore's ItalianGardens on Transit Rd, Depew.  Tickets are $40 per person, deadline purchase is Feb. 6th.  Email the Witts at boopwitt@yahoo.com or call (716)822-9769 to make a reservation.

Thank you

To our family at St. Luke's,

We are grateful for the many evidences of support from so many of you during the time of Stan's cancer diagnosis, surgery, re-admittance to Roswell, and recovery. Your prayers, cards, meals, altar flowers and other indications of support reminded us that we were not walking this path alone, and for that we thank you.

                        Gratefully,  Stan & Elaine Gallup
