| Becoming a Priest | | |
When I was going through the ordination process back in the 1980's, I remember a vestry member at my parish saying, "I didn't know how you became a priest; I thought you people were just born that way." No one is born a priest. Those who feel called to this ministry go through a long process which involves a parish discernment committee, the vestry, the diocesan Commission on Ministry, the Examining Chaplains, and the bishop. Before ordination, prospective priests must engage in three years of theological study, a psychological examination and an intensive clinical pastoral education experience.
At St. Luke's we have been blessed to be part of the formation experience for generations of curates and have raised several men and women up for ordination as deacons, priests and even a bishop. We are blessed once again to be part of the process of commending Virginia Carr for ordination as a priest. She has been serving as deacon at St. Peter's Westfield and now has completed all the requirements for priesthood. We are all invited to her ordination to the sacred order of priests on Saturday, January 15 at 11 am at St. Peter's Church in Westfield. We will be presenting her with a parish gift. If you would like to contribute just send a check to St. Luke's marked "Virginia Carr."
As part of her ordination service, Virginia will be charged to: "love and serve the people among whom you work, caring alike for young and old, strong and weak, rich and poor...to preach, to declare God's forgiveness to penitent sinners, to pronounce God's blessing, to share in the administration of Holy Baptism and in the celebration of the mysteries of Christ's Body and Blood, and to perform the other ministrations entrusted to you." May God bless and uphold her in this ministry!

Thankful for Healing
The Church School begins a new session this Sunday (Jan. 9) in our series "Thankful to God for... Healing." Our story is in Acts chapter 3, where the disciples Peter and John pray over a lame man, and he is healed. The children will be asked to think about times they have prayed for the sick, or been prayed for themselves. What do we think happens? What should be our response to news of healing? (Here's a clue: The formerly lame man leaps up and starts praising God while jumping for joy!)
Since we're starting a new story and a new year, why not bring a friend to ChurchSchool? There will be prizes for sharing!

Meet new St. Luke's Staff members
We have seen some additions and changes to the staff at St. Luke's this past fall. On Sunday, January 9, the Forum will host Miguel Covarrubias, our new Youth Minister and Andy Schmidt, our Interim Director of Music. They will be on hand to talk with us about themselves and about what they are doing here at St. Luke's. Please join us to learn more and to get to know them better, at 9:00 on the stage area of the Undercroft.
On Sunday, January 16, the Forum will continue with its theme of getting to know some of our parishioners with "Meet the Candidates". Come and meet those who are offering their time and talents to serve on the Vestry. |

| Music News | | |
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many volunteers who, in my opinion, helped tremendously in making all of our recent Christmas music performances very successful. Our Adult Choir was at its peak at the 11 pm Christmas Eve service, with their superb rendition of John Rutter's "What Sweeter Music." This beautiful anthem is challenging and vocally demanding, and I felt the choir rose to the occasion magnificently. Additional thanks are due to the three choir members who also provided moving solos during the Prelude music for that service: Luke Allport-Cohoon, Kathleen Morrison, and Ruth Walton. The youth pageant at the 4 pm Christmas Eve service was exceptional as well. All of the young soloists pulled it off with aplomb, and created a moving and memorable event (which also had its moments of humor).
Finally, I would like to thank the members of St Luke's Band, who played in church on January 2. They performed upbeat renditions of some of our most beloved carols, one last time before we put them away for another year.
In short, all of our Christmas music went extremely well, and it couldn't have happened without so many very talented volunteers. Thank you, one and all, and Happy New Year!

| Annual Meeting & Vestry Elections | | |
Sunday, January 30th, 2011, the members of St. Luke's will elect: one warden, three vestry members, and three delegates to diocesan convention. The nominating committee is actively seeking qualified candidates for these positions. As we continue our growth toward truly shared leadership in this parish, active, healthy, committed lay leaders are essential to our success. To nominate yourself or someone else for any of these positions, contact Paula Pickett at 483-2609 or email papmsrd@aol.com. If you have any questions, please speak to her, to Fr. Eric or to any member of the vestry.
For the Annual Meeting we publish a report booklet on all the ministries currently on-going in our parish. Reports for the booklet are due into the church office by Monday, January 10, 2011. Email is best. Please send reports to stluke@netsync.net. |
Be Part of the Bishop's Consecration Service ! | |
"Hard copies" of the Volunteer Sign-Up form are now available in the church, on the table near the font area. They're purple (of course), and list the many ways parishioners can help welcome our new Bishop, Dr. R. William Franklin, and his distinguished guests (including the Presiding Bishop) on April 30 in Buffalo. We especially need to know about choir members soon! Talk to Mother Susan for more information. |
