Questions For
Reflection

1) Think of your best experience of community. What made it so valuable and how did it affect your life?

2) If you were to be a part of a small group or fellowship gathering (maybe you already are!) what would you want to be the focus and with whom would you want to meet? Consider pursuing that this Fall!

Sunday's Message: Shaped by Community
The Rev. Dr. Steve Harrington, preaching
Friends,

GOD from www.creativemyk.comWith the beginning of fall and the new school year many of us make new determinations to order our lifestyles in ways that reflect our values and priorities. A regular and faithful commitment to worship is central to a growing faith and one of the ways that we demonstrate to ourselves and the world around that God is our source and center. See you on Sunday, and why not invite a friend?

Also note that this Sunday we will be celebrating Steve Harrington's 20th anniversary of ministry with and among us!  We'll be celebrating with a lunch and a brief program in the gym at 11:20 a.m.  If you come to worship at 10 a.m, just walk on over a few minutes after worship.  If you regularly worship at a different service, either choose to come at 10 a.m. this week or just cruise on in for lunch with us at 11:20 a.m. and worship at your usual time.  Twenty years together--that's well worth celebrating!

Can't wait to see you this Sunday for worship and lunch!

Peace,
Karin
Theme for the Day
Prayer For a Friend from creativemyk.comWhen one walks the road of life alone there are none to catch him when he falls, encourage her when she wearies, or rejoice with them when they are glad. There is in our national ethos an image of the loner, of the strong silent type, who single-handedly overcomes personal challenges and external obstacles to rise victorious against all odds. But that is more mythic illusion than a viable reality - and it certainly has no basis in the biblical view of humanity. In the very first chapters of the Bible God says, "It is not good for the man to be alone..." and thus articulates one of the most basic realities of our nature: we are created for community. As we worship, think of those whom God has put in your life who are to you "companions along the way." Think also how you might relinquish the delusion that we are to live independently of others. Finally, consider how you might further open yourself to the gift and call of community.
Scripture passages

FIRST SCRIPTURE READING - Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up the other; but woe to one who is alone and falls and does not have another to help. Again, if two lie together, they keep warm; but how can one keep warm alone? And though one might prevail against another, two will withstand one. A threefold cord is not quickly broken.

SECOND SCRIPTURE READING - Hebrews 10:23-25

Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
