Sunday's Message: So What's Wrong with
Waiting on Tables?
The Rev. Joey Lee, preaching
|
Friends,
Worship is what we do to remember both who we are and whose we are. Though some of us will be at our All Church Camp this weekend our worship services continue as normal here in Sunnyvale with the Rev. Joey Lee preaching. If you are in town, come to one of our three services at 7:50 a.m., 10 a.m. or our 5 p.m. Intersections service.
Grace and Peace, Steve

Theme for the Day
| In the Acts of the Apostles we encounter the beginnings of the Church, the apostles, leaders, and members. It is the story of the earliest period of this emerging community of Jesus followers. An amazing, radical, loving and compassionate community, that quickly had to deal with challenges in the areas of leadership, discipleship and service. As always, there is a surprise in the end.

Scripture passages FIRST SCRIPTURE READING - Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18
O Lord, you have searched me and
known me. You know when I sit down and when
I rise up; you discern my thoughts from far away. You search out my path and my
lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my
tongue, O Lord, you know it completely. You hem me in, behind and before,
and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful
for me; it is so high that I cannot attain it. For it was you who formed my
inward parts; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully
and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; that I know very well. My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes beheld my unformed
substance. In your book were written all the days that were formed for me, when
none of them as yet existed. How weighty to me are your
thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! I try to count them-they are more than the sand; I
come to the end-I am still with you.
SECOND SCRIPTURE READING - Acts 6:1-7
Now during those days, when the disciples were
increasing in number, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because
their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution of food. And the
twelve called together the whole community of the disciples and said, "It is not
right that we should neglect the word of God in order to wait on tables.
Therefore, friends, select from among yourselves seven men of good standing,
full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we may appoint to this task, while we,
for our part, will devote ourselves to prayer and to serving the word." What
they said pleased the whole community, and they chose Stephen, a man full of
faith and the Holy Spirit, together with Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon,
Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a proselyte of Antioch.
They had these men stand before the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands
on them. The word of God continued to spread; the number of the disciples
increased greatly in Jerusalem,
and a great many of the priests became obedient to the faith.
