LINC Quick Connect Header

Dear ,

This month the son of one of our neighbors in need celebrated his birthday.  Such times should be full of joy and happiness, but things were not going well for this family.  Heidi has been battling cancer.  She is preparing to have 2 weeks of radiation treatment soon during which time she and her kids will be separated.  Heidi not only has cancer, but has spent her life facing the challenges of autism, both for herself and her son and daughter.

Heidi, a Christian, attends a local church and her spiritual family has been supportive, but she was hesitant to come to them with this financial crisis.  Bills were coming due and steady jobs are difficult to maintain with what Heidi is up against.  How would the bills be paid? How could she celebrate her son turning 13 with so much going on?  Providence Hospital, where she receives care, referred her to Love INC.  God used both a partner church and a very talented volunteer to show Heidi that His family goes beyond the walls of her own church.

One of our partner churches came through with the funds for the outstanding monetary need.  But what of celebrating the life of a boy about to become a teenager?  When Andrea answered her phone earlier this month, she was excited to learn that her gifts and abilities would meet a special need.  "I do cakes for friends and family and want to honor God with my business.  I don't have much money to give, but I can do a cake."  What made this opportunity even more significant to Andrea was that her own mom has cancer too. She can relate to the struggle Heidi and her family is going through.

As Andrea talked to Heidi, she realized she was up for a challenge.  She had decorated many cakes, but Steffen knew just what he wanted and Andrea had never done anything like it before.  A big fan of the game Kingdom Hearts, Steffen wanted a picture of it on his cake.  Andrea was "game" for what is called edible images, but she was not sure how to do it.  She did some investigating and learned a thing or two.  When she delivered the cake the night before the party, it was just what the birthday boy wanted.  When Steffen opened the door and saw the cake, he began to jump up and down. Then the five foot, ten inch tall soon-to-be-teenager gave the not even five foot tall little baker a big hug of gratitude.  God took a willing heart, talented hands, and the gifts of a church body to bring joy and blessing to a family in need.

Obviously, their struggle is not over yet.  Continue to pray for Heidi as she fights this disease and goes through her final round of radiation beginning this Wednesday.  Pray for Steffen and his sister, Allana, as they face separation from Mom during treatment this week and all the fear and worry that come with her being sick.

Love INC's Spotlight On New Staff

Ordinarily this is where we introduce you to the partner churches of Love INC.  This month, however, we would like you to meet our newest member of the Love INC office staff, Glenn Bushnell.

Love INC welcomes Glenn Bushnell to our ministry team as Clearinghouse Supervisor.  His journey to this position has taken him across denominational lines, the landscape of Alaska, and across the pond to England and back.  His work experience is as familiar to us as working in an Alaskan seafood company and as foreign as serving in London with International Mission Board.  His spiritual journey is also diverse.  Glenn came to Christ at 17 from a family that did not know God.  As he journeyed with Christ, several denominations came alongside him to nurture his walk.  Along the way, he met and married Shauna, his amazing wife of 16 years.  They have three lovely children.  In addition to being a supportive wife and mother, Shauna loves to play the bagpipes.  (If your church is up for a concert, Shauna would be happy to schedule one.)

The road leading to Love INC may have begun when God called him first to Christian education, where he received his masters at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary and then into cross-cultural ministry in London, England.  This rich experience has uniquely equipped him for working for Love INC.  "The Clearinghouse Supervisor position allows me to utilize my background in serving local churches and communities, communicating cross-culturally, and managing resources of non-profit organizations.  For the past 15 years, I have been involved in non-profit organizations serving in roles that have focused on the stewardship of resources to maintain the organizations' overall goals and objectives."

We too are excited to see how God will use Glenn's gifts and abilities to further the ministry of Love INC in Anchorage.  "I am confident that Glenn's passions and skills will be a great strength in helping Love INC reach the community," said Elaine Phillipps, executive director for Love INC.

Frienship
When neighbors contact the Love INC call center, volunteers assess their situation, verify the need and connect them with local agencies, ministries, and volunteers from partnering churches.  Volunteer response has been great, however, there are needs we are still unable to meet.

Here are this month's unique and unusual needs:
  • Furniture: The Annex is very low on twin and queen size beds.
  • Delivery teams of 3-4 people are needed weekdays and/or weekends.
  • One or two additional volunteers are needed to help a long-standing volunteer deliver furniture on Thursday mornings from approximately 9am-2pm.
  • Volunteers interested in serving at the call center Thursday evenings anytime between 3-8pm.
  • New Intake workers are needed Tuesday or Thursday mornings between 9am-noon.
Please contact the Love INC office @ 274-5683 to learn more about these opportunities.
