LINC Quick Connect Header

Dear ,

This summer Crystal's (not her real name) apartment caught fire and she lost everything.  She called Love INC.  Love INC asked Wendy to deliver a blessing basket and pray with Crystal.  The blessing basket traditionally is a Bible, a loaf of fresh bread, a set of salt and peppershakers, sparkling cider, a stemware glass for each member in family (sippy-cups for smaller children) and a picture frame.

When Wendy picked up the basket for delivery, she already knew that Crystal was a single mom with a little one.  With that in mind, she added her own personal touches.  Wendy had found a devotional at the Christian bookstore for Crystal.  She also added some chocolate, lotion and a candle.  She exchanged the cider for a plant and included some bubbles, a ball and book for the child.  Wendy even baked the bread herself.  She wanted to make Crystal feel special and know how special she is to God.

Wendy's husband, her friend Michelle, and Michelle's children visited Crystal.  Together they prayed with her, looked the place over, and took measurements to see how they could use the resources donated to Love INC to make her apartment a home again.   In addition to the blessing basket, they had gone "shopping" at the Love INC Annex, where donations are collected.  That day Crystal was given a spice rack, pots and pans, towels, soap, toilet paper, tooth paste, and other bathroom and kitchen supplies.

More was to come.  With the information from the first visit, a team took Crystal a bounty of things for her home:  groceries, a table and chairs, a bed for her child, a toy organizer, containers for storing clothes, even a DVD player.  Wendy also printed up a map of the churches in her area so she would be able to find a church home nearby, as she did not have a car.

All of the people who ministered to Crystal came from one church-- Rabbit Creek Community Church.  This church has caught the vision for how God can use them in the city of Anchorage.  In addition to volunteering individually, Rabbit Creek has organized as a church body to minister.  The executive pastor, Dane Havard, is the contact person for Love INC who coordinates group projects.  "One of our goals for 2011 is to get each small group to get on one or two Love INC projects throughout the year.  We'll have 10-20 small groups," he shared.

Plugging into the community and building the body is a serious part of the senior pastor, Mark's vision, and Dane himself is so passionate about it, that he asked the mission's pastor if he could take over the Love INC portion of the church's missions.  He explained how it also allows Rabbit Creek to live out Acts 2:8.  This church has been very active in going to Judea, Samaria (across Alaska and the United States) and the ends of the earth (mission work around the globe). Now Love INC is allowing them to reach out to their Jerusalem where they live.

Rabbit Creek is currently preparing to take their participation to a new level through a gap ministry.  Remember Michelle who visited Crystal?  She is the new coordinator for the kitchen essentials gap ministry. "I have always had a real heart for local missions," she explains.  "Very few people look at the mission field in their own back yard."  They see the poverty in the towns where they do a mission trip, but do they realize that it looks the same way right here in Anchorage?  They don't notice how poor conditions are outside their own neighborhood.  Volunteering for Love INC, Michelle has seen the need and she wants to get the whole church involved.

So how does an entire church become part of a gap ministry to provide kitchen essentials?  Michelle has it covered.  The children at their vacation bible school collected kitchen supplies as their mission project this summer. After VBS, the entire body continued to collect items.  The next step is to fill the totes with supplies.

Michelle and her team have been working towards kicking off the kitchen essentials ministry on September 4, Labor Day weekend.  They are calling it "Labor Of Love". Again, Michelle means for everyone to be involved.  The children will make gift tags that say, "Packaged with love by _______."  Those assembling the totes will add their names.  The teens will supervise and assist the children.  Adults will be part of the assembly teams and in the days ahead, when the need arises, they will go out with their small groups to deliver the totes.  Please pray and rejoice with Rabbit Creek as they embark on this endeavor.

Love INC's Spotlight On Parnter Churches
We enjoy taking the opportunity to introduce you to the partner churches of Love INC in this part of the newsletter.  Every month we highlight a different partner church and give you a glimpse into what its body of believers is like.  We want you  to see  how God uses churches of all shapes, sizes and styles to reach out to Anchorage.  This month our focus is on Rabbit Creek Community Church.

Rabbit Creek Community Church may be found at 3401 Rabbit Creek Road (345-7830), but they focus their attention on needs across town and around the world.  Their strong mission takes them throughout Alaska, the States, and across the globe.  So in 2009, when they learned Love INC could help them do mission work right in their own back yard, they jumped on board.

Their kitchen essentials gap ministry is highlighted in the article above.  For them, "gap" is an acronym:  "God Always Provides."  Michelle Gist is its coordinator. Dane Havard, the executive pastor, was so excited about partnering with Love INC he asked the missions pastor if he could be the contact person with Love INC for his own ministry.

Rabbit Creek's mission statement below is taken from their website (www.rabbitcreekchurch.org).

                                   MAGNIFICATION (worshiping God)
To "Love God with all your heart" is WORSHIP (Magnification)
                                   MINISTRY (giving back in service)
To "Love your neighbor as yourself" is MINISTRY (Ministry)
                                    MISSION (sharing the good news)
"Go...make disciples" is EVANGELISM (Mission)MEMBERSHIP (developing a relationship with God and other Christians)
To "Baptize them" is FELLOWSHIP (Membership)
                                       MATURITY (growing in Christ)
To "Teach them...all things" is DISCIPLESHIP (Maturity)

Pastor Dane believes Love INC plays a key role in living out that mission statement.  "As we balance the five purposes of the church and also seek to find a balanced approach to missions and outreach (as one of those five purposes), Love INC helps us balance local missions with distant missions.  It is important to recognize that not all Christians are called to "distant" missions, but all Christians are called to missions.  Local work like Love INC helps RCCC fulfill the Great Commission to 'go' without the expense of travel from Alaska.  It provides a great opportunity to express Christ's love to our neighbors next door by putting hands and feet to our faith."

In addition to the gap ministry, those attending Rabbit Creek have been part  of partnering with Love INC in delivering baskets, going out as prayer teams and furniture delivery teams.  They minister locally with Alaska Baptist Family Service Center (ABFS), Thanksgiving Blessing and Project Angel Tree.  The church also financially supports Crisis Pregnancy Center, Anchorage Rescue Mission, Mountain View Community Church and Chugach Resort Ministries.
Love INC Urgently Needs Your Financial Support
We are abundantly grateful to all who have graciously supported Love INC by generously giving your time, resources and prayers.  We do not typically ask directly for financial support; however, Love INC in Anchorage is experiencing a lean season.

There are currently a variety of ways in which you can personally support the operations of Love INC in Anchorage through monetary gifts:

  • Join in a fundraiser to support Love INC as you purchase Premier Designs Jewelry for yourself, family and friends.  By purchasing beautiful, quality, high-fashion jewelry you will be blessing the ministry of Love INC and the families we impact.  The jewelry representative is generously donating all her profit so this is an excellent opportunity to bless Love INC, as 50% of all sales will go directly to our organization.  Additionally, since Love INC is the host, all the free jewelry earned will be offered at an upcoming Love INC auction.
The fundraiser will be Wednesday, September 15th  at 7pm at the Love INC office. There will be a jewelry presentation at that time.  If you are unable to join us that evening, please come by the office any time after September 1st to browse the jewelry catalog and place your order.  Pre-orders must be submitted by September 15th.  If you have any questions, please call volunteer Liz Jones at 229-3952.

Current unmet/unusual needs
Your chance to help...

Frienship
When neighbors contact the Love INC call center, volunteers assess their situation, verify the need and connect them with local agencies, ministries, and volunteers from partnering churches.  Volunteer response has been great, however, there are needs we are still unable to meet.

Amazing!  That was the response to last month's request for laundry and dish soap.    Thank you so much for your generosity.   Here are this month's unique and unusual needs:

  • BIG NEED: Men's work/professional clothing (dockers/slacks, button-up shirts, suits, white t-shirts, dress socks and shoes, and belts)
  • Box Truck to be used for picking up and delivering furniture
  • Delivery teams of 3-4 people are needed more now than ever before!  We have lots of donated furniture and many families in need of items; however, we need more volunteers to help move items from the Annex into neighbor's homes.
Please contact the Love INC office @ 274-5683 to learn more about these opportunities.

I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, 'You are my servant'; I have chosen you and have not rejected you.  So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you;  I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
