WAartsallianceA message from our friends at the Washington State Arts Alliance

Washington State Advocates:

State, county and city financial situations are rough as we weather the third year of a fierce recession. I'm reminded of Betty Davis' famous quote... "Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy night!" (yes, night, not ride). Public officials are wrestling with budgets, programs, public mandates and trying to fairly represent the many demands and needs of their constituents. To say it will be challenging is an understatement.

What can we do? We can continue to speak up and advocate for our city, county, state and federal budgets to maintain arts & culture programming, or at least that the arts agencies not take a harder hit than any other agency. Declare the message that your community's creative industry is an economic engine, a spirit builder and job creator. Whenever and wherever you are speak positively about your work and the importance of arts, culture and heritage as a civic "anchor" in your community. We can't know where we are going without knowing where we have been. Our culture and history provides that base.

We see lots of work on the horizon for the Washington State Arts Alliance. Remember that the Alliance is largely supported by our members and donors. As with most nonprofits, corporate and government support are down this year for our educational programs. We are requesting extra contributions from our statewide "advocates" to continue our wonderful programs. Anything from $5 to $500 or more (all tax-deductible) will help us offset the budget losses from our usual governmental and corporate supporters.

For more information about our November Advocacy Training Workshops in Seattle and Tacoma, State Legislator Candidate Survey on our website, three regional monthly arts meetings and February's Arts & Heritage Day, read on!

Now is the time to have sharp eyes and ears in your community and support our take-action alerts broadcasts. With our advocacy efforts, let's keep that "bumpy night" as smooth as possible.

Best regards,
Mary Langholz
WSAA Executive Director

PUBLIC ART CONTRACTS

Seattle City Hall
Bertha Knight Landes Room
Wednesday, October 27
6:30 - 8:00 p.m.

Calling all public artists, public art administrators and the attorneys who work with them. When a public artist is awarded a commission, it can be thrilling and overwhelming all at the same time. Before launching into the art opportunity, artists - and their project administrators and attorneys are tasked with navigating contract clauses and intellectual property issues that are often specific to the field.

Two workshops, coordinated by 4Culture and Washington Lawyers for the Arts, with additional support provided by the Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, are designed to address a gamut of questions relevant for emerging and experienced public art professionals.

The M. Rosetta Hunter Art Gallery
@ Seattle Central Community College presents:
patricavazquezBorderlands
September 27 through October 28, 2010

Borderlands showcases works by artists of color inspired by the literature produced by feminists of color. The exhibition examines how visual artists explore the intersections between gender, race, sexuality, class, nationality and other forms of social membership and the "borderland" spaces between them. Borderland artists have developed unique visual languages as well as creative strategies to manifest the complexity of their identities, exhibiting works that, paraphrasing Gloria Anzalda, have been conceived as "forms of cultural activism employing definite aesthetic strategies for resisting dominant cultural norms".  Featured artists include Patricia Vazquez (lead curator), Cecilia Alvarez, Veronica Barrera, Nichole Hart, Leticia Nieto, Onion, and Luyi Xu.

Gallery Hours:
M-F 9:30 AM to 3:30 PM
Evenings: Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 5:00 - 7:00 PM
Free admission

The M. Rosetta Hunter Art Gallery is located at the north end of Seattle Central's Atrium Cafeteria, in the main building at Broadway and Pine.  For more information call 206-344-4370 or visit www.seattlecentral.edu/artgallery
