Henry

The Henry Art Gallery, University of Washington, is seeking nominations of emerging artists to be considered for the second biennial The Brink award. The Brink award is sponsored in partnership with long-time Henry Art Gallery benefactors and Seattle art supporters John and Shari Behnke. It is intended to recognize and encourage emerging artists from Washington, Oregon and British Columbia. A $12,500 prize is awarded to an individual artist who has demonstrated great promise in the early stages of a professional career. The recipient will also be given a solo exhibition at the Henry, and a work of his or her art will be acquired for the museum's collection.

Fundamental to The Brink award is a desire to recognize an artist whose work explores a range of ideas beyond the surface of mainstream culture, one who displays innovation and high artistic quality. Signs of great promise are sought, and may be found even in work that is still rough around the edges. Evidence of some professional ambition is required, but the artist does not need to possess an extensive record of accomplishments.

The Henry seeks nominations for the award from regional arts professionals. We hope you will decide to nominate a single artist whose work you find compelling. Full guidelines please go to www.henryart.organd click on "about us"; open the link to The Brink.  We want to emphasize that this is an open call to arts professionals in our region; we encourage you to forward this message to qualified colleagues.  Nominations must be received by October 15, 2010.

We believe The Brink award is an affirmation to artists of the importance of their presence and their profession in our region's dynamic cultural landscape. Your efforts in support of the nominating process are essential to fulfilling the purpose of the award. Thank you in advance for your participation. For further information, please feel free to contact Leah Walker, Special Projects Coordinator, at thebrink@henryart.org, or 206-221-4623.

WSAC

Washington State Arts Commission invites you to our September 23 Arts Participation Webinar.

WSAC will host an online webinar on September 23, 2010, 10 to 11 am, to review and further discuss the recent successful Arts Participation Leadership Forum and Workshopspresented by the Washington State Arts Commission andThe Wallace Foundation. Arts organizations are encouraged to gather their staff members to participate in this timely discussion of emerging practices in Audience Engagement by nationally recognized researcher and consultant Alan Brown of WolfBrown together.

Background: The arts engage people in infinite ways, and for an endless variety of reasons. For the recent WSAC forum and workshops on audience engagement, nationally recognized researcher and consultant Alan Brown led a terrific exploration of how arts organizations can - and must - rethink how they engage people before, during, and after the arts experience. Alan sees engagement as a guiding philosophy in the creation and delivery of arts experiences - so that the arts experience has more meaning, audiences are more loyal, and arts organizations have more relevance and impact.

For quick access on the day of the webinar, go to https://www.spiderphone.com/46444896 (This link will help connect both your browser and telephone to the call) OR dial 1 (888) 550-5602 or +1 212-812-2800 and enter 4644 4896 to participate only by phone.
