Congratulations to Juan Alonso for his

Mayor's Arts Award!

La Sala sends very warm "felicitaciones" to Juan Alonso, one of six recipients of the 2010 Mayor's Arts Awards. Once a year the Seattle Arts Commission receives and reviews nominations for the annual awards for individuals and organizations that are making a difference. Juan is not only an accomplished and successful visual and public artist, but one who continually engages, energizes, and empowers fellow artists and the wider community. He often leverages his own art and personal milestones to further those efforts. On the occasion of his most recent birthday, Juan broadcast his birthday wish: his friends and colleagues helping him raise $4,000  to offer ten Latino/a artists scholarships to Artist Trust's EDGE program. The goal was surpassed and now a magnificent new resource has been created for our Latino/a artist community. In Juan's newest effort, he's using his art to raise funds for the National Wildlife Federation's Gulf Oil Spill Restoration Fund. To learn more about this effort please visit Juan's Blog. Keep up the good work Juan y felicitaciones!

Juan in his own words:

Over the years as my images and subjects have changed along with mediums and techniques; I have found that more than anything, humanity is the driving force in my work. The fact that I was born in Cuba, the quick loss of innocence I experienced as a young person in a foreign place, learning a new language, and growing up without my immediate family will always affect my work; sometimes more obviously than others. The politics that have made me an outsider intrigue me since they are almost always present, yet out of my control. The human condition, our fragile existence on this planet, the way we relate, love, isolate, and unnecessarily damage ourselves and the world we live in are fascinating topics, no matter how they are ultimately expressed. I am influenced by balance, perceived symmetry, alter-egos, architecture, growth & decay, weathered beauty, and sexuality.

Sign up and be Counted!

The following is an excerpt from the most recent Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affair's June Newsletter. La Sala encourages ALL Latino/a artists and arts groups to participate! We need to let people know who we are and what we're doing to support the arts in the Northwest.

"We encourage all artists and organizations in Seattle to register with Dun & Bradstreet (it's free, and it's easy) in order to be counted. Please make sure you are included in the 2011 report by registering today.

Seattle has also been selected to be one of 100 areas participating in a local version of the National Arts Index launched earlier this year by Americans for the Arts. We will compile local data over the next 16 months to develop Seattle baseline data.

These studies and other research are very important to our sector. We treasure what we measure in our society, and in the absence of reliable data on arts and culture, it becomes increasingly difficult to articulate the important role of arts and culture in the health of our neighborhoods, our economy and our quality of life. Tracking data on an ongoing basis helps us ensure Seattle's position as one of America's leading cultural capitals." Read the full newsletter here.
