Ready to get "Outrageous" to build your business? |
|
It's the chicken/egg syndrome of small businesses: You need to spend money to bring in clients/customers , but you don't have money to spend until you get more clients/customers.
Too often, small business owners treat marketing as an optional expense. The truth is if you don't dedicate an adequate budget of time and money to marketing, it's unlikely you'll attract enough clients/customers to sustain and grow your venture.
The good news is, many small businesses have successfully marketed themselves on a shoestring. By effectively applying creative solutions to marketing challenges, you can get the word out to prospective customers without going for broke.
One of the biggest challenges we consistently hear from small biz owners is the lack of money to create and/or implement effective marketing campaigns.
This week we are concentrating on affordable, cost-effective ways for small business owners to gain the attention of new clients/customers and the attention of the media as well. Free publicity is good, ya' think?
The point here is to raise your business above the clutter -all the noise. Stage an outrageous marketing stunt. Your marketing stunt should not cost a lot of money, but should be well thought out and effective. Check out these sample outrageous marketing stunts: (Start thinking how they may be adaptable to your business.)
The age old "Tear off" concept revived with good humor and bright attention grabbing color. It was originally done for a European dentist. The results were both immediate and astounding.
Each "tear off tooth" contained an incentive offer and the contact details. It received thousands of extra dollars of FREE publicity when both TV and newspapers ran it. (I can't imagine who tipped them off) for a total cost of well below $50.00 for 10 locations, the return on investment would make even Donald Trump blush.
Here's an idea so simple it's almost silly. That is, until you learn that it provides this window cleaner and his 20 man team with over 90% of their work and has increased his sales by over 400%! Maybe it's not quite so silly at all!
In fact, the person who shared this story saw this truck recently while walking his dog. The "WINDOW CLEANING" sign on the truck prompted him to think about the state of the windows in his business and his home so he took one of the yellow flyers attached to the sign (shown in the photograph of the truck). The window cleaner made an immediate sale from his outrageous marketing!
Part of the effectiveness of his marketing is its immediacy. Normally the new customer/client would have walked right past a sign on a vehicle without a second look. But this was different, it spoke to him and it worked.

Wear a sandwich sign to a location/event where people do not normally expect to see someone wearing a sandwich sign.
Have two signs made with your message. The signs seem to be more effective if they ask a question, i.e. "Have you tried it yet?" "Want to be debt free?" Be sure your telephone number, address or web address are big enough to be seen.
Strap the two signs together over your body. Wear the sign to a trade show, county fair, networking event, conference, etc. Take flyers, brochures, business cards, etc. to distribute.
Yesterday, I received something in the mail that really grabbed my attention - an EAR. At first I wondered if it was some "not too subtle" message from "The Godfather" but it turned out to be a very clever mailing piece from one of my clients.
The envelope included a large plastic ear, the type you find in party supply stores and a letter. The accompanying letter read like this:
"Yes, it's an EAR. You see, I just wanted to use this attention getting way of letting special customers like you know, the chef and I really HAVE been listening to your menu suggestions. So, last week we sat down and invented a whole new menu, a menu we are really excited about and I have included a copy for you to look over."
The letter went on to explain, with passion, why each new dish had been added then finished with:
"But, please don't despair, all your old favorites are still available as well. "
Then the letter added the all essential call to action:
"To celebrate the release of our new menu and sincerely thank you for being a highly valued customer and for your friendship over the years, I have included a gift certificate which will allow you to test drive our new menu - at our risk."
Now that is very, very, clever! Just think, in one very quick, very memorable, attention grabbing letter, he has told me: He has something NEW to tell me. He values my opinion. He values my business and regards me as a loyal friend, and of course he would welcome my opinion of his new menu - at his risk.
WOW! What do you think the chances are that I will tell a few people about this? Oh yes, and I almost forgot:
The ear can be used as a key ring, so it will be around forever, reminding me of his cleverness and his business. This concept can be used for any business that wants to let its customers know that it cares about them and listens to their opinions.
Here's a clever idea I read about recently: Purchase a whole bundle of very cheap wallets direct from an importer, the Internet, Dollar store, etc. Put in coupons for whatever you wish to promote along with a letter explaining that to reward their honesty you are offering them - your offer,
"Lose" these wallets around your community in high traffic locations. It's a fun way to get your message across and get potential customers/clients involved in your promotion.
It's obviously not going to work (economically) for low ticket items, but would make a great letter box drop for real estate agents and car dealers looking for something a little different to break through all the monotonous clutter.
When creating your marketing stunts keep the following in mind:
Is it enough to make potential clients/customers take the next vital step?
Is it enough to make them write down your telephone number, address or website?
Where is the self serving benefit to potential clients/customers?
Where is the reason they should change from their current supplier/provider to you?
Are they going to rush back to their office and change a long term purchasing relationship, simply because they saw a clever marketing stunt?
After a marketing device grabs attention, it must make a strong, self serving offer, to the target customer. It must convert their attention to action.

| 5 "THINGS TO DO" this week
to build your business... |
|
MONDAY, May 12
Create a Mother's Appreciation week. Contact the mothers in your database. Let them know, at your business, mothers deserve more than just a day. Invite them to a brunch or tea you will host exclusively for mothers or provide a special discount or pricing for this week only.
How about getting together with other service providers to offer your mothers a "mini-spa experience"? Invite other small business owners to provide services; a message therapist, chocolatier, someone who gives spa treatments, jewelry sales rep, cosmetologist, manicurist, maybe even someone who sells lingerie (I suggest you only include lingerie if you are a woman!).
Find a way to build a recurring payment plan around your business. If you have a one-time purchase of your product, what could you offer to your clients to have them come back more often?
Could you do a tune-up or re-evaluate or re-design once a year? Rather than waiting for them to call or come in... offer them a reminder and a monthly enticement to come back in.
Offer your clients/customers a discount to bill them monthly, quarterly or yearly. Up to 50% (sometimes more) of your clients will take this option... what would that add to your bottom line?
WEDNESDAY, May 14
Make two coffe, lunch or dinner appointments for next week with a client, mentor, someone who can send business to you or a potential client. Discuss mutually beneficial strategies.
THURSDAY, May 15
Participate in the Tele-Workshop; Outrageous Marketing on a Shoestring. Get answers to your marketing questions and step-by-step instructions to create your customized marketing stunt.
