BUILDING A MULTI-MILLION
 DOLLAR BUSINESS

Michael Schuh, CEO
Michael's Hair Salon and Spa
and
The Media Group @ Michael's
We are pleased to share Michael's story and how he achieved his phenomenal success. It is our hope you find it inspirational and chock full of the wisdom of experience. We certainly did!

Michael Schuh is the CEO and owner of Michael's, a high-end salon and spa in Centerville, Ohio. He recently started The Media Group at Michael's, a commercial production, web development and graphic design company.

Located in 17,000 square feet in Cross Pointe Shopping Center, the salon and spa is luxuriously designed to pamper his clientele. A tour through the facility whisked me away from Dayton I felt as though I was somewhere on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills.

It was hard to believe that Michael, a self-admitted "small town boy," started his career at sixteen in a beauty "Shoppe" his mother owned. The styling stations were made from 2x4's, a piece of glass and a curtain. "I grew up in a small town, Lebanon, Ohio. I had no formal education,,didn't want to work in a steel factory. I wanted to be a hairdresser," says Michael.

After a stint in the Navy Michael attended beauty school, then went to work in his mother's salon, Ada's Beauty Shoppe. A year and a half later, Michael's mother gave him the keys to the "Shoppe" and said, "This is yours!" Michael was stunned. "I didn't want to be a businessman, I just liked girls and wanted to play with their hair," Michael recalls. However, Michael felt if he was going to be a businessman he might as well be a good businessman.

Two profound pieces of advice provided by his father stand to this day as the basis of Michael's success. "My Dad," Michael shares, "told me 'If you have one rule to live by it should be, Treat others as you would have them treat you. Also, set goals that are higher than you think you can reach. If you get close to those goals you will be very successful.' "

Michael set two goals: 1.) To be a millionaire by the age of thirty and 2.) To be the most successful hairdresser. "I'm not sure what that is, but it is more than I have right now,"
Michael remembers saying to himself.

"When I started, I had no clientele. I would go to four different places to order
coffee and give a business card to all of the waitresses who waited on me. Within two to three months I had a full clientele," Michael proudly states. "I would do the hair of people who were often in the public eye. People who would tell others; word-of-mouth.

So, that is how Michael Schuh got his start. Now Michael shares with me how he grew Michael's to be the phenomenal success it is today.

Below are five THINGS TO DO this week to help you make your small business successful.

We'll send you five more THINGS TO DO next week...

MONDAY, January 14

Send handwritten notes to everyone you met last week. Start with the people you met at last week's networking events.
TUESDAY, January 15
Identify the issue that is your biggest business challenge RIGHT NOW! Write five possible solutions to that challenge/issue. Now write a plan to implement each possible solution. Determine at least one solution you feel is the most affordable, effective and efficient. Start working on that solutions NOW!
WEDNESDAY, January 16

Schedule two networking events to attend next week. It's easy to get isolated in a home business or your own small business operation. Force yourself to get out and meet with others that can provide a business support structure for you. One of the benefits of a corporation is the workings of teams and the ongoing support structure it provides. You need to create that for yourself. Don't think you can do it all by yourself. By talking to others in business you will discover great ideas, and it will help motivate you.
THURSDAY, January 10

Forecast your cash flow. It sounds boring and difficult, but it's not. Keep it simple. Look at your next three months projected income or revenue, then just lay next to it all the expenditures you need to keep the business running. The difference is your cash flow. You must do this to avoid surprises. Most businesses hit the brick wall because they fail to understand their cash flow.

FRIDAY, January 11

Contact five people you know. Tell them how what you do helps others solve their problems. Let them know what kind of referrals you are looking for. Ask for referrals!
Next week we will send you more THINGS TO DO to build your successful business!
Sincerely,
Your partners in your success
