We're Lead Paint Certified

On April 22, 2010, a new Environmental Protection Agency ruling took effect and required that contractors that disturb paint in any way must be certified to work with lead paint.  As usual, Steve Schliff stepped up to the plate and hit an EPA home run:  He took the certification course through NARI (our friendly local chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry).

Here's a little quiz-for-fun to both educate and challenge your knowledge of this issue.  Answers are at the bottom of the newsletter.

1.  In what year was lead-based paint banned in the U.S.?

2.  True or False:  lead paint ingestion can cause children to develop

     learning disabilities.

3.  Violation of this new EPA ruling could result in a daily fine of:

     (A)  $578

     (B)  $37,500

     (C)  $78,250

The EPA regulations address the growing concerns that common renovation activities, like sanding, cutting, and demolition, can create lead dust and chips that pose health risks to adults and children.  The law is meant to ensure that contractors use lead-safe work practices and follow three simple procedures:
  • Contain the work area
  • Minimize dust
  • Clean up thoroughly

 Designing For One and All

"Universal design is the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design
."     -Ron Mace

Times have changed since 'accessible' design has transformed into 'universal design', a term coined by Architect Ron Mace (1941-1998) .  In lieu of special features that accommodate disabled residents, rooms and the products that go into those rooms are designed as convenient for everyone including those who are physically disabled and must use wheelchairs.

If you have a family member with special physical needs, be sure that any remodel you undertake is designed by someone with know-how in this area.  Features such as lower counters, wider spaces, or entry and exit ramps, among many others, will make the difference in safety, utility and comfort.
