Are Pocket Doors a Good Solution?

Pocket doors can be useful in dividing interior space in your house.   Because they don't 'inswing' or 'outswing', they offer a spatial advantage over hinged swinging doors.

Pros
:
  • You don't need to be mindful of furniture, rugs, carpeting or other objects that would become obstacles to a swinging door.
  • They are a clever solution to cramped, small rooms that cannot be expanded any other way.
  • Glass-paneled pocket doors create light and space between two rooms while maintaining a division.
Cons:
  • The door hardware can be tricky to manipulate.
  • They can come loose from their tracks if not well made.
Looks like the pros outweigh the cons.  Do you have a pro or con to share about your pocket doors?  Share them at :  otbeam@sbcglobal.net.

Kitchen remodel in Richmond

Vertical and Horizontal Storage Space

Certain rooms simply cry out for more storage:  bedrooms; diningrooms; bathrooms; laundryrooms; kitchens.  Fortunately, there are numerous clever ways to exploit the existing space to create more storage.

You can go up as well as out:  both along the wall horizontally and upwards toward the ceiling.  Appliances such as microwaves, ovens and double ovens can be embedded in the cabinetry areas, offering the added benefit of not having to stoop over and lean in to retrieve food.

You can develop a designing eye.  Stand in the middle of a room with poor storage capacity and examine each wall from floor to ceiling.  Then imagine how many cabinets, pantries or shelves you can fit on each wall without anything else in the room.  Plan both vertically and horizontally.  The final step is to eliminate any cabinet that is in the way of a necessity, such as a door, dishwasher, bathtub, etc.  You will arrive at that room's full storage capacity.
